Luminosity eliminate Immortals in close lower bracket matchup
It’s a classic we’ve seen multiple times over the last few months - Immortals facing off against Luminosity Gaming. In the lower bracket of North American Masters with elimination on the line, it was LG who broke their losing streak against their opponent to live to fight another day. Immortals have been eliminated, while Luminosity play again next week, against the loser of the Envy-FaZe Clan matchup.
Map picks were interesting for this series, as we ended up on Split, Haven, and Bind, probably the maps we had seen the least of these three teams on over the last few months. The pistol and follow-up ended up going to Luminosity, before Immortals put together a long string of wins guaranteeing they’d come out ahead at the half. Luminosity did manage to make things happen towards the end, though, bringing things to 7-5.
The second half was incredibly tight. Big plays happened on both sides of the match. Luminosity gifted mid to Immortals nearly every round, choosing instead to play aggressively on A site. And for a while, it worked, in part thanks to some big clutches from Alex "aproto" Protopapas and Kaleb "moose" Jayne.
However, Immortals stormed back, with Andrew "ShoT UP" Orlowski popping heads. He’d close the map at 34/18/8, 412 ACS, and 2.04 Rating. Immortals would pull it back to take the tight 13-11 map win.
For Haven, Luminosity pulled out a shock, with Diondre "YaBoiDre" Bond running Jett. The first half was very close, with Immortals making things happen on their attack but Luminosity pulling out some big retakes as well. Things ended 6-6. Coming in to the second half, LG really started to pull ahead, taking the first four rounds. While Immortals kept things close, Luminosity didn’t let that go for too long, and an ace from Brenden "stellar" McGrath closed out their 13-9 win to send things to map 5.
Unlike Haven, compositions were as expected for Bind. Immortals started off the map well, finding momentum on their defense, but Luminosity came right back, pulling off smart rotations and playing around Showers perfectly. Back-to-back flawless rounds for LG late in the half made it 6-6 as sides were switched.
Just as the entire match had been, the second half was back-and-forth and incredibly exciting. LG would pick up a few rounds in a row, then get ecod, before Immortals would follow the same pattern. It came down to the wire. With the score at 12-11 LG, they were forced on to an awkward buy, but aproto with a Sheriff is just as good or better than aproto with a rifle. LG cleaned it up, taking the map 13-11 and the series 2-1.
