The infrastructure behind VALORANT
As VALORANT chugs along through the closed beta, more details are being released by the devs about the intricacies of the game. In the third installment of the Dev Diaries, we are given a detailed look at the measures VALORANT developers are taking to give everyone a level playing field.
David “ZealousApathy” Straily (Technical Engineering Lead) and Dave “StealthyJesus” Heironymus (Technical Director) wanted to emphasize their thoughts on competitive integrity and how the design has been made so that the players have a great FPS experience. This is reinforced as the two speak about “Riot Direct” and the 128-servers. “Riot Direct” is Riot Games' very own ISP (internet service provider). This affords the developer team the ability to make sure that a player's connection to the game will never hinder or lack. All the servers will be set up to ensure that there are no “holes” in the network, as Hieronymus goes on to say. What is also stated is that they will continue to set up servers across the globe to make sure everyone who wants to play the game is able to do so with a good connection.
Straily later highlights the importance of the 128 tickrate servers that are in place for the game. The fact of the matter is, no one likes peekers' advantage. That’s why Riot Games has made certain to do everything in their power to reduce said advantage through advanced servers. This ensures that what you see on your screen is what is actually registered in the game. 128 tickrate servers will make sure that the game runs smoothly for the entirety of the layer base.
