One of the most common searches around prediction markets is whether Kalshi is legal. And the answer is yes, Kalshi is a CFTC-designated contract market and is available to US traders in 40 states, except Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Utah, and Washington.
Some states restrict some categories, but most have access to a range of markets including sports, politics and economics. Traders need to be at least 18 and clear identity verification with a passport or driver’s license before being able to make a trade. After you’ve been approved, you can take a position from just $10.
So how does Kalshi work? Well, if you’re hearing about Kalshi for the first time, Kalshi lets you trade contracts on real-world outcomes across a range of categories like sports, politics, economics, entertainment and weather. You take a position on whether you think something will happen or not, with each contract settling at either $1 or $0 depending on whether you’re right or wrong.
If you think something will happen, you’d buy a Yes contract, and if you think it won’t happen, you’d buy No. The price you pay reflects what the market thinks the probability is, and your profit is the difference between the price you paid for the contract and the $1 you receive for winning (minus any fees). So if you buy 10 contracts at $0.60, you’ll have spent $6 in total. If you’re right, you’ll get $10 back, which is $4 profit before fees. If you’re wrong, you’ll have lost the whole $6.
The vast majority of states can access every contract category on Kalshi. So for most traders signing up, you’ll find every category available. There are some states in particular that have restrictions on certain categories, but even in those states, the restrictions are partial rather than a complete block. Kalshi is available in 40 states, except Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Utah, and Washington. However, we recommend you to doublecheck the availability in your specific state before registering.
If you’re in a state where Kalshi is available, you’ll need a few documents ready to be able to sign up to the site.
Kalshi’s standard age requirement is 18+, but if your state requires a higher age, you’ll need to meet that age of majority. To do this, you’ll need to provide a residential address as well as a government-issued ID. Kalshi can also request proof of employment details or source of funds on top of the basic documents.
Accepted ID includes a valid, unexpired passport or driver’s license that’s undamaged and readable. You’ll need to photograph the original physical document along with a live selfie check and Kalshi won’t accept screenshots, photocopies or photos taken on another screen. Some account features stay restricted until you’ve completed verification, so you’ll want to have these documents ready to avoid delays.
Funding your Kalshi account is one of the easiest parts of the process, and Kalshi accepts a range of transfer methods. But the minimums and Kalshi fees vary between them.
| Deposit method | Minimum | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| ACH bank transfer | $10 | $0 |
| Debit card (including Apple Pay, Google Pay) | $10 | Up to 2% |
| Wire transfer | $1,000 | Free but bank fees may apply |
| PayPal | $10 | First deposit free, then up to 2% |
| Venmo | $10 | First deposit free, then up to 2% |
| Cash App | $10 | Fees vary |
| Crypto | $10 equivalent | Network fees apply |
The range of contracts available on Kalshi in fully-accessible states is massive. But the specific markets within each category rotate depending on the calendar and what’s happening in the world.
Sports contracts are one of the biggest categories of Kalshi, and the NFL player markets are a great example of how specific those contracts can be. You can trade on individual player performance outcomes as well as game results, with new props coming up throughout the season as matchups are confirmed.
Politics contracts cover elections and other political outcomes, and economics focuses on questions like interest rate decisions and employment figures. Categories like these tend to move around major scheduled events, so you’ll see a surge of election contracts in the months before a vote, with economics contracts spiking around Fed meetings or jobs reports.
You’ll find Kalshi event contracts like awards show results, music charts and movie-related outcomes surrounding the entertainment category, alongside technology contracts that track company milestones and performance indicators. There are also weather contracts around environmental outcomes. These categories tend to not get as much attention as sports or politics, but they give traders something to take a position on year-round when there’s a gap in major events between the bigger categories.
If you’re in a state where Kalshi is available, most trades will go through without any issues. But there are a few situations where you’ll hit a wall even with a fully funded account.
This is the obvious one. As mentioned above, if the contract you want to trade on falls under a state restriction, you won’t be able to access it regardless of your account status. Just because you have a working, verified and funded account, it doesn’t override any geographic limitations on specific categories. So always check the availability section in the state you’re in.
Kalshi makes it clear that some account features will stay restricted until you’ve completed identity checks. So if you signed up and funded before clearing your verification, you might find that certain functions are locked until the process finishes.
Some contracts won’t appear until closer to the event. Combo buttons typically show up once starting lineups or rosters are finalized in the sports category. If you’re not seeing a contract for an event you’re looking for, it might just mean the event details haven’t been confirmed yet.
Some orders aren’t guaranteed to be filled. They can sit unfilled or only partially filled depending on the price you set and whether there’s someone taking the other side of the position.
If you’re depositing with ACH, it can take up to 5 business days to go through. Kalshi may only release part of the funds early, depending on the transfer and your account history. If you’ve just funded your account and can’t place a trade, the money might still be sitting in transit.
Kalshi is available in most states, but a few currently have restrictions on certain categories. If they don’t apply to you, getting started in an available state is a simple process that only requires you to pass the age and ID verification. So confirm the contracts you’re interested in are available, get your ID ready and take your first position.

Availability and access to certain markets depends on your state.
Yes, your physical location is what determines access, not your home address. If you travel to another state, your account won’t let you trade the restricted categories. But that works both ways when you return to your home state.
Kalshi’s minimum age is 18, but you also need to meet the age of majority in your state. There’s no requirement to be 21 to open an account.
