Let’s make this real simple – if you’re not cooking food in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’re going to perish. A lot. Eating raw ingredients is a lousy way to heal after a tough Bokoblin beating, and it’s never going to get you the buffs you need to survive some of TotK’s tougher areas.

Heck, you can’t even get through the tutorial without learning how important cooking is.

But with 228 total recipes available, it makes sense that you might want to shortcut your way to knowing which meals are worth making.

TotK food recipes and cooking 101

Any time you cook up some food or are given a meal or elixir by an NPC, you’ll get a recipe card to remind you how to cook it again.

You can view your recipes from either the Food menu or the Materials menu.

From the Food menu, either press X, or select a meal with A, then press A again on the “Check recipe” option. Either option brings up your recipe card list, and shows you what ingredients you need to cook that meal again. It also shows the effects of eating that food, and you can scroll left and right to view all the other meals in your cookbook.

From the Materials menu, press A on any ingredient and hit “Select for recipe”. This will show you all the recipes you’ve made using that ingredient.

Neither of these methods will teach you new recipes though. The only way to do that is by being given a new meal, cooking one yourself, or studying recipe posters dotted on the walls of shops and stables.

Each recipe in your cookbook has a number in TotK, and we’ll be showing you all the recipes in the game in that order.

    How to cook a meal

    1. Find a cooking pot.
    2. If the fire is out, light it.
    3. Open the Materials menu.
    4. Select your first ingredient with A, then press “Hold”.
    5. Select the other ingredients you want to use.
    6. Return to the game.
    7. Press Cook.

Pro tip: find a cooking pot and make some meals during the next Blood Moon – your food will come out all the stronger for it!

    Food buffs

Some recipes in Tears of the Kingdom will only heal you, while others will give you a buff that can mean the difference between life and death. To cook up some food with a status buff, you’ll need to use more than just a few apples and cuts of meat – you’ll need to add a few special ingredients to your recipes.

Here are the buffs you can cook into your food with the right ingredients…

    Buff

    Description

    Biting

Raises attack power in cold weather

    Bright

    Makes Link glow

    Chilly

    Heat resistance

    Dark

    Gloom resistance

    Electro

    Electricity resistance

    Enduring

    Increases stamina wheel

    Energizing

    Restores stamina

    Fireproof

Prevents Link from taking fire-based damage

    Hasty

    Increases movement speed

    Hearty

    Increases maximum hearts

    Mighty

    Increases attack

    Rapid

    Increases swim speed

    Scorching

Increases attack power in hot weather

    Sneaky

    Increases stealth

    Spicy

    Cold resistance

    Sticky

Allows Link to climb wet surfaces

    Stormy

Increases attack power in stormy weather

    Sunny

Heals heart containers damaged by Gloom (but doesn’t fill them)

    Tough

    Increases defense

If we listed all the possible ingredients to include in your recipes to bring out these buffs, we’d be here until Purah looks her actual age again.

Your best bet instead is to learn to spot the ingredients you need based on their name, as they’ll usually include a naming convention that links them to the buff they’ll bring out in your food.

    • Got some Mighty Bananas or a Mighty Carp – yup, that’ll boost your attack power if it’s in your next recipe!
    • That Fortified Pumpkin or Ironshroom? – darn straight, that’ll increase your defense.
    • Those Hearty Bass? – best believe that’ll increase your max hearts.

To cook like a pro in TotK, you’ll need to know when to use these ingredients with your recipes to create status-enhancing versions of your meals.

Some meals will use 5 ingredients already, meaning you can’t throw in that extra status-buffing ingredient. But where you can, it’s a great game mechanic to play around with!

The difference between food and elixirs

They may both have recipes, but meals and elixirs have a fundamental difference you should remember: you make elixirs by cooking monster parts with critters.

And when TotK says “critters”, it means any small insect or animal. Hot-Footed Frogs? Yup. Sticky Lizards? You betcha.

Pro tip: generally speaking, avoid mixing these ingredients when cooking your meals, or you’ll end up with the infamous Dubious Food. That said, there are some exceptions…

    The best recipes in TotK?

The best recipes in TotK are the ones that give you exactly what you need for the challenges ahead. Sounds basic, right? Well, it is.

If you’re just getting started in this thrill ride of a Zelda game, having a bunch of meals that restore 10 hearts is pretty pointless. Having a slew of meals that give you Cold Resistance is handy in the Hebra Mountains… less so in warmer climates.

There’s no doubt about it, cooking is pure strategy in TotK. You need the right food for the quest ahead, it’s as simple as that.

The only surefire fact beyond that is that you’re always better off eating a cooked meal than eating raw ingredients.

    Cooked recipes

These recipes create everything from an average to a bang-up meal. Most will just heal hearts, but some have special effects too. And, of course, any of these recipes that don’t use a full 5 ingredients are wide open for you to add special ingredients to and give the meal a little something extra…

    Frozen recipes

Similarly to the roasted recipes, each of these are single ingredients. This time, you’ll get the final result by dropping the ingredient on the ground in a cold environment… or using some kind of ice attack.

These “recipes” are great for giving you heat resistance (but that’s about it!).

Where can I get the best food in ToTK?

The best food in Tears of the Kingdom comes from Hearty ingredients found across Hyrule. You can find Big Hearty Radishes near wet areas, such as marshes and rivers. Hearty Truffles grow in forests and caves, usually hidden under large trees. These ingredients are important because they fully restore your health and give you extra hearts.

To make strong meals, use only Hearty ingredients when cooking. Mixing five of them in one pot gives you full recovery and a large bonus of temporary hearts. Cooking during a Blood Moon also increases your chances of getting a “critical cook,” which makes your food even more powerful.

What recipe restores the most hearts in ToTK?

The recipe that restores the most hearts uses five Big Hearty Radishes or five Hearty Truffles. When cooked together, they fully restore your health and add up to 25 bonus hearts. Cooking during a Blood Moon can make the effect stronger.

What is the best food to beat Ganon?

To prepare for the fight against Ganondorf, cook meals made with Hearty ingredients. The best option is five Big Hearty Radishes cooked together. This meal gives maximum health and a large number of bonus hearts. With this food, you can survive Ganon’s attacks longer and focus on dealing damage without worrying about losing too much health.
