Major VALORANT update announces new ranked rewards, matchmaking improvements, and more balance changes
As we head into Act 3 of Season 2026, the developers of VALORANT are rolling out major updates across the board. Competitive play is getting plenty of attention as Riot works to make RR and MMR (Matchmaking Rating) feel more balanced and rewarding. The team has also taken a closer look at the current meta and the future of limited-time game modes. Here’s a breakdown of the biggest updates coming to VALORANT.
Competitive experience
The goal of competitive play is simple for the Riot devs: your rank should clearly reflect your skill level. To ensure the VALORANT ranked system stays competitive and fair, the developers will continue testing and refining matchmaking.
While Riot previously updated its MMR (Matchmaking Rating) system to better reward standout performances, some players have reported large rank disparities and uneven RR gains and losses. To address this, Riot recently adjusted how RR gains and losses are calculated so matches feel more balanced and consistent.
Competitive integrity
A spot on the Radiant leaderboard should represent the highest level of competition. To maintain competitive integrity and ensure top-ranked performances are legitimate, Riot has recently invested more heavily in anti-cheat systems and win-trading detection. In the long term, Riot is exploring broader improvements to make reaching Radiant feel even more rewarding. The developers are also looking into specialized rewards for players who climb to the very top of the ladder.
Ranked rewards
The V26 Act 3 and Act 6 gun buddies will be the last time gun buddies serve as the primary ranked reward. Instead, Riot is developing a new progression-based reward system that players will receive on day one of an Act. The reward will evolve alongside players as they grind ranked matches throughout the year. This new system is expected to arrive in 2027, with more details scheduled to be revealed in September.
New game modes
Since 2025, Riot has experimented with several limited-time game modes to keep gameplay fresh and exciting. Based on community feedback, Riot is now bringing even more new modes to the servers.
- The first upcoming mode combines elements from Replication and All Random One Site. The chaotic moments from Replication will be amplified by the unpredictability of All Random One Site, featuring more ultimates, more abilities, different agents, and nonstop action on a single site.
- Riot is also working on a new Spike-focused mode featuring shorter rounds and smaller team sizes. More information about the mode is expected around Season 26 Act 4.
- In addition, Riot teased another upcoming mode described as a “KAY/O combat simulation gone haywire,” which is currently planned for Act 5.
Game balance
Last year, Riot released a major gameplay update aimed at improving combat clarity. Many abilities received longer cooldowns, while others were adjusted to reduce their overall impact. Following that update, Riot reviewed community feedback and identified areas that still needed adjustments. While the developers are happy with the game’s overall direction, more updates are on the way to keep VALORANT balanced across the meta, gunplay, and teamplay. Here are some tweaks being made in coming patches:
Patch 12.09
- Neon movement is getting nerfed
- Weapon tuning (Shotgun)
You can read more about the Neon nerf and shotgun changes here.
Patch 12.10
- Replay file sharing: Riot is adding the ability to download and watch friends’ replays. Players will be able to access a button next to matches in a friend’s match history to view replay files.
Patch Patch 13.00
- Initiator signature ability cooldowns are being reduced from 60 seconds to 50 seconds.
- The Bandit is receiving buffs to become a more viable weapon option, similar to the Sheriff.
- Sentinels are getting buffs to encourage more strategic gameplay.
- Penalties and report feedback for rank manipulation will be implemented.
- New 3v3 Spike mode.
Conclusion
Riot continues to push updates aimed at making VALORANT more balanced, competitive, and enjoyable throughout 2026. Some updates are designed to fine-tune previous patches, while others aim to keep the experience fresh for players.
Competitive play remains a major focus this year, as ranked remains the core reason many players continue grinding VALORANT.
