N4RRATE on his comeback to EMEA: “Everything has to get better”
A big move in the offseason for EMEA was the return of Marshall "N4RRATE" Massey to Karmine Corp. The American player left Sentinels after a disappointing start to the year at Kickoff. After parting ways with Sentinels, N4RRATE had the opportunity to return to his former organization in EMEA, and he took it.
So far, KC is 0–2 in VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - EMEA Stage 1, but it’s starting to look more competitive. After their latest match against Gentle Mates, THESPIKE sat down with N4RRATE to talk about his return to EMEA and the vibes on the new roster.
Found confidence against Gentle mates
In Week 2 of Stage 1, KC faced off against Gentle Mates. Compared to Week 1, KC looked more confident and competitive in the matchup. One player who also showed improvement was N4RRATE. In the first two maps, he put up strong performances on Fade. On the third map, however, he played Veto and couldn’t quite keep up.
I thought overall the first two maps I was playing pretty well. I got a really good understanding of how they're playing and I just I was just playing well, like I was feeling super confident, no stress at all. Third map, I don't know why I was just a little bit stressed on defense. I was playing way more passive than I normally do. So I was just a bit stressed and yeah, I think I cost us the last map.
Move to EMEA
At Kickoff, N4RRATE had a rough time on Sentinels. After failing to deliver results, the team decided for them to part ways, making him a free agent. Around the same time, rumors started circulating that Karmine Corp was looking to bring him back. Those rumors were confirmed when KC announced N4RRATE’s return in March.
When asked about the move, N4RRATE explained that the opportunity itself was the biggest factor, and that he’s been happy with the new squad.
I mean, mainly it was just opportunity. I think that after kickoff, when I got dropped from Sentinels, I think there's obviously in between kickoff and split one, there's not that much time for teams to make changes. And a lot of teams are dedicated to their rosters. So for me, I just knew it was an opportunity that would you know, I could potentially have.
While N4RRATE feels the level of competition and meta is similar between regions, the biggest difference for him has been team culture.
So a lot of the time we're just all together hanging out and it's completely different than how it was for me in LA. Obviously, I think the competition is around the same. I think there are very good teams. I think there's obviously weaker teams. And right now, like,I think parity between the regions is pretty even.
Old role, new vibes
Comparing his role on Sentinels to his current role on KC, there are a few key differences. On Sentinels, N4RRATE often played Duelist, but on KC he’s back on scan Initiator which is a role he’s very comfortable with.
I would say it's similar to how it is like back a few years ago. Obviously, I'm going to be playing a lot of scan Initiator just because that role is what I'm most comfortable playing and I'm very good at. I'm very flexible and I know how to play the game at a high level on multiple agents. And right now, for me, scan Initiator is just by far one of the strongest roles in the game.
KC’s current roster is new for both the organization and N4RRATE. None of his former teammates remain, but that hasn’t been an issue. Despite only a few weeks together, the team is already building strong chemistry both in- and outside of the game.
I think the vibes of the team are really good. I think everyone is very friendly and everyone like, I don't know, they like to, everyone likes to be around each other. Everyone's always like, even, you know, five hours after practice ends, we're all five in the same room still. There's no disconnect between us.
Much support from the fans
When his move to KC was announced, N4RRATE received a lot of support from French fans. Their enthusiasm made the transition much easier and N4RRATE praises the European fanbases for their dedication to the teams.
It's been really cool. Obviously, the fans are amazing. They support me in ways that I don't understand, to be honest. It is very cool to be on an org like KC because the fans are extremely passionate and they're very dedicated to, like, their club. I feel like esports teams in Europe and other countries have way more connection to, like, their national fan base than the United States
During his time on Sentinels, especially when results weren’t there, N4RRATE faced some backlash. However, he doesn’t seem to take it too personally. He feels like this is just a part of being a professional VALORANT player, even if it sometimes can be a tough climate.
If you perform well, people are going to love you. If you perform bad, people are going to hate you. Even if you perform well, people are going to hate you. So it's kind of just all part of the profession.
Gaining confidence
A problem N4RRATE had during Kickoff was the lack och confidence. He has been open on social media, and in previous interviews, that it’s something he has been working hard to regain in Stage 1.
His focus right now is to get back on top both mentally and in-game.
I think my competence definitely has gotten a lot stronger since then, or since week one. And I think it's only going up from here. I think the biggest thing for me right now is mentally like how well I can be committed slash like engaged in the game. Obviously, I would say between week one and week two, I've trained so much harder than I normally train. So I definitely think it's paying off. And I think it'll only, like I said, only keep going up.
Working on the team identity
While KC has shown improvement, there’s still work to be done. N4RRATE and his teammates are focused on developing their identity and refining what works for them in-game.
Slowly but surely, the fans are getting to see the N4RRATE they know, and the journey is far from over.
I think we're slowly finding it and I think you guys can see that as our improvements from week one to week two. Obviously it's still not enough to be competitive yet and win games and really be a team that can compete for EMEA.
