Team Heretics win VALORANT Esports World Cup 2025 in reverse sweep over Fnatic
On one of the grandest stages of them all, inside Riyadh's STC Arena, two EMEA giants - Fnatic and Team Heretics - battled for more than just a trophy. The EWC VALORANT - Esports World Cup 2025 promised legacy, history, and a whopping $500,000, but for Team Heretics, it symbolized redemption.
After five grueling maps, the underdogs rose from the ashes of repeated failures to secure their first-ever title, etching their names in history as the inaugural champions of the VALORANT Esports World Cup.
Team Heretics 3-2 Fnatic
Fnatic’s Early Domination
The series began in terrifying fashion for Team Heretics, who looked entirely out of sorts on Fnatic’s pick of Lotus. Austin "crashies" Roberts and Timofey "Chronicle" Khromov formed an impenetrable wall on defense, while their offense was clinical and decisive.
A lopsided 13-4 scoreline put Fnatic in the driver’s seat, and things only worsened on Sunset. Playing their own map pick, Heretics managed just one round as Fnatic closed it out 13-1 - a crushing blow for any team, let alone one with Heretics' finals history.
The Comeback Begins
But Heretics didn’t crumble. With everything on the line, they took the fight to Fnatic on Icebox. Mert "Wo0t" Alkan, who had been silent in the first two maps, finally erupted. His KAY/O performance swinging crucial rounds back in Heretics’ favor. Tied at halftime, Heretics edged ahead to claim a 13-11 win, their first map of the series and a crucial mental reset.
That same momentum spilled onto Haven. Fnatic again surged to a 9-3 halftime lead, but the dreaded "9-3 curse" struck with vengeance. Led by a reinvigorated Wo0t on Iso, Heretics mounted an incredible comeback, dominating the second half to win 13-10. What once looked like a swift 3-0 sweep had suddenly become a 2-2 series with everything to play for.
The Final Blow on Ascent
With the score tied, Ascent became the deciding arena. Both teams exchanged rounds early, and Fnatic edged out a narrow 7-5 lead at the half. But their over-cautious approaches and mid-rounding came back to bite them.
Heretics punished every mistake, shutting down late executes and outmaneuvering Fnatic’s slow approach. This time, it wasn’t just Wo0t. Dominykas "MiniBoo" Lukasevicius and Enes "RieNs" Ecirli stepped up in crunch time, combining firepower and composure to claim the final map 13-10. From 5 rounds won in the first 2 maps to 3-2 champions, Team Heretics completed one of the greatest comebacks VALORANT has ever seen.
The Accolades
This triumph marks Team Heretics' first-ever trophy in VALORANT - regional or international - and it couldn’t have come on a bigger stage. After five previous finals losses, their sixth attempt finally broke the curse. For Fnatic, on the other hand, it is another bitter loss, as they come in 2nd place once again.
Wo0t, whose turnaround performance in the series was nothing short of heroic, was rightly awarded tournament MVP honors.
Their 1000 Club Points also tie them at the top of the EWC leaderboard alongside giants like DetonatioN FocusMe and even Max Verstappen’s BMW M Redline Racing.
From constant runners-up to world champions, Team Heretics’ story is one of resilience, belief, and evolution. The victory in Riyadh not only cements their place in VALORANT history but also sets the tone for Stage 2 and beyond. If this is the new standard for Los Niños, the rest of the world better be ready.
