VALORANT Knockout: Everything you need to know about the new game mode
Riot Games is shaking up VALORANT's game mode roster with the introduction of Knockout — a fast-paced, round-based elimination mode that mixes tactical depth with relentless action. Officially revealed during the grand finals of VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Masters Santiago 2026, the mode is set to go live on servers with the Season 2026 Act 2 update on March 18, 2026 alongside the new agent, Miks.
What Is Knockout?
Knockout is best described as a tactical, team-oriented evolution of Team Deathmatch. It is a round-based elimination mode where killing an enemy not only secures a frag but also revives a fallen teammate. The mode is explicitly designed to deliver high-frequency kill trading and coordinated team plays in sessions lasting between 8 and 15 minutes.
Why Introduce Knockout?
VALORANT has been steadily expanding its non-competitive playlist, and Knockout fills a very specific gap. The mode caters to three distinct player groups:
- New players get intensive exposure to kill-trade scenarios and team coordination with little to no waiting time
- Veterans get a sandbox to execute and test advanced plays without Spike-related pressure
- Friend groups with limited time get a quick, collaboration-heavy session that doesn't demand spike-plant levels of coordination
The mode arrives just weeks after 2v2 Skirmish was added to matchmaking queues in February 2026, signaling Riot's clear intent to grow VALORANT's casual and semi-competitive offerings.
How Knockout Works:
Pre-Round Phase
Each round begins with both teams spawning in opposite spawn areas behind raised barriers. This brief window lets players select their loadouts and discuss strategy before the barriers drop and the round begins.
The Central Wall
Once barriers drop, teams advance toward the central wall, the structure dividing the two sides. Crossing the wall alone is a tactical mistake; coordinated pushes are key. Teams can also capture Orbs to physically shift the wall toward the enemy's side, compressing their territory and gaining an advantage.
The Kill-Revive Cycle
The defining mechanic of Knockout is its kill-and-revive loop:
- Eliminate an enemy and a fallen teammate respawns.
- The rhythm shifts constantly. No single death is permanent until the round is over.
- Teams must keep trading to maintain numbers advantage.
This creates the conditions for comeback moments that the mode actively celebrates. A player who finds themselves in a 1v5 situation can chain two kills, retreat, wait for teammates to revive, and suddenly flip the round into a 3v3.
A round ends when one team fully eliminates the other. If that doesn't happen within the time limit, an overtime mechanic kicks in to force a resolution. The first team to win 4 rounds wins the match.
Whether you're a returning player looking for a low-pressure re-entry point or a newcomer who wants to dip their toes in the game before committing completely, Knockout has something real to offer. With its launch set for March 18, 2026, the VALORANT community won't have to wait long to find out if it lives up to the hype.
