VCT EMEA revises Challengers #3 qualification format mid-season
VCT EMEA has published an official update addressing a significant change to the qualification structure for Challengers EMEA Stage 3, walking back a previously announced pathway that relied on cross-league points comparisons.
Out with the Old, In with the New
When Riot Games outlined the Challengers EMEA roadmap at the end of 2025, the plan was to send eight of the best-performing teams from each Challenger league, alongside an additional eight teams determined by points earned across the broader Challengers circuit. On paper, it seemed like a balanced dual-pathway system, with one rewarding league dominance while the other rewarded consistent regional performance.
After reviewing the structure at the start of the 2026 season, VCT EMEA identified a critical flaw: the Challenger leagues operating across the EMEA region differ substantially in their formats and points systems. Comparing points earned across structurally different competitions made it impossible to allocate those eight circuit-based slots in a way that was genuinely fair to all participating teams.
As a result, VCT EMEA scrapped the dual-pathway model entirely for Challengers #3.
The New Qualification System
Under the revised format, the 16 teams with the highest championship points from VCL 2026 - EMEA: Stage 1 and Stage 2 will earn direct qualification spots for Challengers EMEA Stage 3. The stakes couldn't be higher, because Stage 3 serves as the direct gateway to the VCT EMEA Stage 2 Play-Ins, making it arguably the most critical event in the regional calendar.
If fewer than 16 teams accumulate championship points across the first two events, the remaining spots will be filled by top finishers from the LCQ Play-In.
LCQ Expanded to Soften the Blow
VCT EMEA acknowledged that changing the rules mid-season is a frustrating development, particularly for regions that built their strategies around the original format. To compensate, the organization has expanded the LCQ tournament to allow all Challenger teams to participate, ensuring no squad is left without a meaningful path to qualification.
VCT EMEA confirmed it will continue working with tournament organizers to establish a framework that prioritizes fairness and transparency going forward.
