VCT EMEA Stage 2 Play-Ins preview: Can Challenger teams take down Tier 1 giants?

The VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - EMEA Stage 2 Play-In stage is about to begin, and this year's edition is set to deliver fresh narratives and plenty of surprises. That's because four teams from VCL 2026 - EMEA: Stage 3 will face off against Tier-1 sides who failed to make their way directly into the playoffs.

Will these Tier-2 teams manage to take down some of the Tier-1 squads who didn't shine during the first part of the stage? Let's break down the direct matchups to find out what could happen once the Play-In stage kicks off this Thursday, August 6.

Will the Challenger teams be able to surprise us?

GiantX vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt are the only team that qualified through the VCL 2026 - EMEA: Last Chance Qualifier, so on paper they could be the weakest of the four Tier-2 teams. Never say never, though, since this is a roster full of players who are yet to play under the brightest lights — aside from Ondřej "MONSTEERR" Petrů, who got the chance to play some games with KOI — so they could have the surprise factor on their side.

GIANTX are not in their best moment right now, as the team is struggling to get on the same page, but that's understandable, given that all the issues with Cihan "musz3kk" Göçer's visa certainly didn't help. Still, they had some time to practice after the end of the Group Stage, so maybe they'll manage to ramp up their performance a bit. In truth, GIANTX should be the clear favourites, since Eintracht Frankfurt's players, due to their lack of big-stage experience, could crumble under the pressure.

NAVI vs Joblife

Joblife have been trying for years to secure a spot on the big stage, and now they've finally earned their chance. The French org is running a roster full of former Tier-1 players such as Bartosz "UNFAKE" Bernacki, Domagoj "Doma" Fancev, Maks "kamyk" Rychlewski, and Emil "runneR" Trajkovski. Not everything is going smoothly for the org, though, as Egor "chiwa" Stepaniuk had to be replaced by Mohammad "Pa1ze" Khatib due to visa issues.

Natus Vincere come into the series as favourites, since their run through the Group Stage of Stage 2 showed they have genuione potential. Individual mistakes happen a bit too often for them, but with Kirill "ANGE1" Karasiow working behind the scenes, they should feel confident in their ability take home the victory.

PCFIC Esports vs Fire Flux Esports

If there's one match that could really swing in favour of the Tier-2 team, this is it. PCIFIC Esports still haven't managed to secure a win in the VCT, and that streak looks set to continue. Fire Flux Esports, on the other hand, have kept their core intact for quite some time, and five Turkish players playing together are always a scary prospect to face. Mehmet Batu "batujnax" ÖZASLAN and Kaan "REAZY" Ürpek are the ones leading the charge, both having had the chance to compete in the highest league.

PCFIC just aren't there yet. Even if they show good games against some VCT teams, it's always just the one game, and pulling off a glow-up in such a short time isn't really realistic. They're up against the second best Challengers team, so good luck to them.

FNATIC vs Enterprise Esports

Well, well, well, Fnatic fans should be scared of this matchup, because this is not going to be an easy one. This Enterprise Esports squad, led by players of Patryk "paTiTek" Fabrowski and Martin "MAGNUM" Penkov's caliber, isn't here just to play, they're here for a real run in the Play-Ins. This roster completely demolished the competition at the Challengers finals, even sweeping Fire Flux 3-0 in the final, so they could well be the dark horse of this Play In stage.

Fnatic, on the other hand, are not in a good spot at all. The team isn't managing to pick up the pace, looking far slower than the rest, as if they're trying to force a stale playstyle into the current meta, and it just isn't working. Their last defeat against Team Heretics, which ended in a brutal 0-13 scoreline, was the crowning moment of a terrible run. We're still talking about a team that used to sit at the top of EMEA for years, so this could either mark the start of a redemption arc for them, or become the straw that breakes the camel's back.

The other competing teams

FUT Esports

FUT Esports are, together with Team Heretics, the teams who finished the Group Stage in third place, and, because of that they are the big favorites to make it through to the end of the bracket. Their presence in play ins isn't totally fair as they showed everyone that they can compete with the best teams who are already in playoffs. It seems unlikely to see them struggling against the Tier-2 squads.

Team Heretics

The same can be said for Heretics, even though they're clearly a little shakier than FUT. There are plenty of games they should win that don't go the way they expect, but their most recent 13-0 win over Fnatic showed everyone that the potential to do well is there. Heretics and FUT are the teams to beat in this stage.

Eternal Fire

Eternal Fire managed to skip the first part of the Play-In stage thanks to their convincing win against Fnatic. The team had big ups and downs as they managed to sneak wins against even Team Liquid, only to then fall 0-2 against teams like GIANTX.

Which version of Eternal Fire will we get to see? Only time will tell.

Gentle Mates

This squad looks like the third best team of the Play-Ins stage. Even though things haven't gone incredibly well for them lately, as they dropped series against BBL Esports and Team Vitality, against the bottom teams it should be a different story. Because of this recent underperformances, rumors of a roster swap ahead of play-ins continue to swirl. A last minute move could turn out great, but it could also be a tragic one that condemns M8 to an early exit from this stage.

Who will make it to the Playoffs stage?

Only four teams will secure a spot in the Playoffs, and the battle for those slots is closer than it's ever been. FUT and Team Heretics should manage to get there, but never say never with the Spanish side, since, as we all know, they can have incredible blackouts where they simply don't perform.

The other two teams who seem most likely to advance are Gentle Mates and Fnatic. Yes, their form isn't great at the moment, but there's still time left, and both sides have all the tools needed to do well and push further into the tournament. Enterprise will probably be the dark horse of the stage, so definitely expect them to take some games off of Tier-1 teams.
