ENVY benches Inspire, signs Demon1 in shock mid-tournament move
In a shocking development that no one saw coming, ENVY has announced the benching of one of their Ascension-winning stars Hunter "Inspire" Schline in the middle of the VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Americas Kickoff. The decision comes at a critical time for the organization, as they fight for their tournament lives in the lower bracket.
To fill the void, ENVY has secured the signing of everyone’s favorite "super-sub," Max "Demon1" Mazanov, who will debut for the team immediately. However, this is not just a temporary substitution like many would have thought. Instead, it's a full signing from ENVY, giving Demon1 a 1-year contract, as confirmed by ENVY CEO Mike Rufail via an X post.
An Abrupt End for an Ascension Hero
The timing of the roster change is unprecedented. Inspire was a foundational pillar of the team’s identity. As one of the longest-standing members, he was part of the original RANKERS squad signed by ENVY in 2024. He played a pivotal role in their dominant run through VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Ascension Americas, effectively carrying the banner for the organization's return to Tier 1 VALORANT.
Despite being considered one of the team's top performers, reports suggest the move was motivated by other factors. According to sources close to the situation, internal friction had reached a boiling point, with inspire reportedly not getting along with the current coaching staff and teammates.
Inspire confirmed the move on X (formerly Twitter), signaling his intent to return to competition:
"Today @Envy moved me to the bench and they're allowing me to explore options as a restricted F/A. Nothing makes me happier than being on that stage and I'm going to continue to grind to get back there ASAP."
The Stars Align for Demon1
While Inspire’s exit could be considered a blow to whatever team chemistry ENVY had left, his replacement brings some level of excitement. Demon1 joins ENVY under arguably the most haphazard circumstances in VCT history.
Demon1 had already been active in the 2026 Kickoff, standing in for Cloud9’s Francis "OXY" Hoang, who was absent due to a personal tragedy. During his brief tenure with Cloud9, Demon1 put up spectacular numbers—specifically against ENVY in the mid-bracket—proving he still possesses world-class aim. However, with OXY returning to the server for Cloud9’s recent loss against G2 Esports, Demon1 was once again left on the sidelines.

However, ENVY got lucky with the timing. Needing an immediate replacement for Inspire without the headache of visa issues or buyouts, they found a red-hot Demon1 ready for his sixth VCT team. It is a rare "win-win" for the organizations involved, though it leaves Inspire in an unfortunate limbo.
Lower Bracket Stakes
There is no time for a honeymoon period. Demon1 will don the ENVY jersey for the first time today, on the day of the announcement, in a high-stakes lower bracket elimination match. And to top it all off, his debut will be against his former organization,Evil Geniuses.
The pressure is immense. A loss today means immediate elimination from Kickoff and the end of any hopes for the first international appearance for ENVY. A win, however, offers a lifeline and sets up a clash against 100 Thieves in the next round. All eyes will be on the server to see if the "super-sub" can save ENVY’s controversial start to the season.
