G2 Esports bow out early from Esports World Cup 2025
In a turn of events at the EWC VALORANT - Esports World Cup 2025, G2 Esports - fresh off their top-four finish at VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Masters Toronto 2025 - have been eliminated in the group stage. After a surprising 13-6 loss to Karmine Corp in their opening Best-of-1, G2 faced elimination against Chinese representatives Bilibili Gaming, and ultimately fell short at 2-1 in the series.
For a squad expected to go deep into the tournament, their early departure comes as one of the event’s most shocking storylines so far.
Series Recap
The match began with BLG’s pick of Sunset, and from the get-go, it was a bloodbath. Starting on attack, BLG rolled over G2’s defenses, closing the half at 10-2 and wrapping up the map 13-3. G2 looked lost, with three of their five players finishing with single-digit kills. However, assistant coach Peter "shhhack" Belej, who was subbing in for Nathan "leaf" Orf, was not among those three.
But on Pearl, G2 fired back. With a dominant 9-3 first half on attack, they regained momentum and never let go, taking the map 13-4. This time, it was BLG who crumbled under pressure, unable to adapt to G2’s offence.
With the series tied, Icebox became the battleground for survival. G2 started strong on defense, holding a slim 7-5 lead at halftime. But their no-duelist, utility-heavy composition faltered on attack. Despite flashes of brilliance, their attack side was appalling. BLG rallied back and took the decider 13-11, eliminating G2 from the tournament.
leaf's Abence and shhhack's Performance
A major factor in G2’s performance woes was undoubtedly the absence of leaf, the team’s primary Sentinel. In his place, shhhack - normally behind the scenes as assistant coach - was thrust into the limelight. While expectations for a substitute are always tempered, the numbers paint a difficult picture.
Across the three maps, shhhack ended with a 0.82 rating and was the lowest-rated player in the server. While he had decent moments on Pearl (13/7/1), his performances on Sunset and Icebox left much to be desired.
But the problem wasn’t his alone. Other G2 players like Trent "trent" Cairns (0.85 rating), Alexander "jawgemo" Mor, and Jonah "JonahP" Pulice (0.93 each) also struggled to leave an impact. The team looked visibly disjointed without leaf’s defensive stability and clutch potential, exposing their heavy reliance on the 21-year-old.
Looking Ahead: G2 at a Crossroads
With VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Americas Stage 2 looming, G2 now face an urgent dilemma. If leaf remains unavailable, do they continue working with shhhack, or search for a more competitive short-term replacement? Their EWC exit has shown that even a top-tier roster can falter without cohesion and comfort.
There’s no easy answer, but one thing is clear: G2 must recalibrate fast. For now, all eyes turn to leaf’s recovery, and whether G2 can bounce back in time for their next major challenge.
