Munchkin joins T1 for the 2026 VCT season

T1 have announced the signing of legendary IGL Byeon "Munchkin" Sang-beom, adding the VCT 2024 - Masters Shanghai winner to their star-studded ranks as they look to secure another trophy following their VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Masters Bangkok 2025 victory.

    A veteran IGL

Munchkin had an impressive 2024 season on Gen.G Esports, a team some considered to be the best of the year, where he led the team to a runner-up finish at VCT 2024 - Masters Madrid and a first-place finish at Masters Shanghai. Quick-thinking in the mid round and an all round sharpshooter, he was a highly sought after pickup in the 2025 offseason following the end of his contract with GEN.G. With his decision to go to arguably the biggest Korean esports organization and reunite with former teammate Kim "Meteor" Tae-O, the Masters winners are looking even more deadly coming into the 2026 VCT season.

    Korean superteam discussions reignited

Munchkin will be joining in place of Kang "DH" Dong-ho, an outstanding rookie for the team at VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Valorant Champions, who will be moving back to T1 Academy.

When Yu "BuZz" Byung-chul and Meteor were announced to join Kim "stax" Gu-taek on T1 last year, discussions of the team being considered a 'superteam' started circulating, and with Munchkin's addition, T1's superteam status has been enhanced. Munchkin is expected to take over IGL duties, relieving stax of his duties. This will certainly bring forward a new direction for the Korean roster, especially since stax has expressed his interest in taking up a non-IGL role several times in the past.

    Questions about GEN.G

With Munchkin's departure, GEN.G will be looking for a new IGL to fill in his shoes. Yet with the organisation's debut in SVL - 2025: Main Event in less than a week and no rumoured roster additions, there are speculations about how GEN.G will attempt to reclaim their 2024 dominance in 2026.
