"The clips have been taken out of context" — xavi8k on GE's in-game comms
Global Esports opened their VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Champions Shanghai campaign with a narrow 1-2 defeat to Team Vitality in the opening match of Group B. The loss sends the VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Pacific Stage 2 champions to the lower bracket, where they will face EDward Gaming on October 2 with elimination on the line.
THESPIKE sat down with Xavier "xavi8k" Juan after the series to talk about what went wrong against Vitality's EMEA style, the viral GE comms clips, the coaching staff behind their Stage 2 title, and a debut Tier 1 season full of firsts.

"Every map we played, we could have won"
THESPIKE: What are your immediate takeaways from the Vitality match? Do you think you played to the standard you showed at the end of Pacific?
xavi8k: "I think we could have done better today, for sure. I think every map we played, we could have won, and we all felt that we could have won. We just needed to close out more rounds. Personally, as an IGL, I think I need a better read on them: on Attack, where they're stacking, and on Defense, what they're retaking. I don't think we really adapted to the EU playstyle. But I think they're one of the only teams who play like that. In our future matches against EDG or LOUD, they're going to be playing more like APAC teams."
THESPIKE: As a first-time IGL, you've mostly been calling against APAC teams. What makes the EU playstyle harder, or different, to read?
xavi8k: "I think one thing is they commit three to a take on one side. One side is going to be heavily stacked, and the other side is going to have only one person. And on their attack, they execute with 20 seconds left, 10 seconds left, and they're still able to plant the bomb, because we weren't able to delay it enough."
THESPIKE: Going into the next match, what will it take to close out those rounds against LOUD or EDG?
xavi8k: "It's going to be a different playstyle. They're going to play more like Pacific teams, and all of those teams have very strong firepower. I think it's going to be about our teamwork and composure, and how we counter them as a team."
"Everyone can speak their minds"
THESPIKE: GE has gone a little bit viral online for its in-game comms, which can be passionate and quite unfiltered. How do those comms play into the GE playstyle, and what's your role as an IGL in facilitating them?
xavi8k: "In the system we have at GE, everyone can speak their minds and say whatever they want, and I just layer everything. All the information everyone is giving, I layer it and make it into one call. And the clips that have been going viral are really taken out of context, for sure. How could we have won Stage 2 if our comms were like that the whole time? Of course there might be some heated moments, but it's never personal. If you watch the rest of our games, our comms were amazing. Especially today, I think our comms were on point, and we played really well as a team. I just thought they were better."
The coaching trio behind Stage 2
THESPIKE: One of the biggest changes this year was Daniel "Platoon" Zhou stepping up as head coach. As an IGL, what's your relationship with him like, and how has he helped elevate the team?
xavi8k: "I think Platoon has been there since day one. Ever since Kickoff and Stage 1, he's been really helping out. Then in Stage 2 he became the head coach, we won Stage 2, and we qualified for Champs. I think without what Platoon was doing, it wouldn't have been possible to win Stage 2. Especially now that we have Derren "aimix" dela Cruz, my old head coach, and we have Sam "Fields" Greenfield, who was also head coach of BOOM. I think the synergy those three have is really good, and the results show in our region. Now we just have to prove it at an international."
Family in the crowd
THESPIKE: The VCT socials have been posting clips of Champions players reacting to video messages from their parents. Your mom was super passionate in London. How has her support helped you on this journey?
xavi8k: "My mom always believes in me. She let me go down this path: move out of the house at 18, move into a bootcamp. She let me do all of that. It just feels good knowing your parents support you in doing something. She never gave me any headaches about it. She's always supported me. She's here in Shanghai now, and my whole family's in the crowd. There's like eight of them. It's nice knowing that she's in the crowd watching."
Global Esports will look to bounce back against EDward Gaming in the Group B lower bracket on October 2, with their Champions Shanghai campaign on the line. For more interviews and coverage from VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026, stay tuned to THESPIKE.GG.
