VALORANT Masters Santiago forced to redraw Group Stage matchups after major error

VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Masters Santiago 2026’s group stage saw unexpected drama following the second day of competition, and it had nothing to do with the matches. After Paper Rex and Team Liquid secured decisive 2-0 victories, joining Gentle Mates and NRG in the 1-0 pool, a massive error occurred during the live draw for Round 2, leading to the entire bracket being redrawn hours later.

    The Original Draw Process

The Round 2 draw rules for Masters Santiago are straightforward: intra-regional matchups are permitted, and matches are seeded based on a team's win-loss record. Because all four 1-0 teams won their opening matches 2-0, a random draw was required.

The intended procedure was simple. The first team drawn should occupy Slot 1 (top left). The second team drawn goes to Slot 2 (bottom left). The third team then goes to Slot 3 (top right, facing the team in Slot 1), and the final team goes to Slot 4 (bottom right, facing Slot 2).

    Where It Went Wrong

The live broadcast quickly went off the rails. Paper Rex was drawn first and placed correctly in Slot 1. However, when Gentle Mates was drawn second, presenters placed them in Slot 3, immediately setting up a PRX vs M8 matchup.

This error was quickly noticed by viewers and co-streamers, including Connor "Sliggy" Blomfield, who pointed out the mistake live. The mistake snowballed, compromising the rest of the draw. The 0-1 pool was drawn using the same flawed method, resulting in EDward Gaming vs G2 Esports and XLG Esports vs T1.

While it is easy to blame the on-stage presenters, the issue stemmed from deeper mismanagement. Stage host Nico Valina later clarified that the flawed procedure was also practiced during stage rehearsals.

    Riot's Response and the Redraw

Several hours after the broadcast, Global Head of VALORANT Esports Leo Faria addressed the situation on X.

"We made a mistake on today’s draw on stage during the live broadcast. The second team was placed in the wrong position, which cascaded throughout the rest of the draw, leading to all other teams being placed incorrectly."

Acknowledging the wasted preparation time for the teams, Faria confirmed a redraw would take place at the player hotel with the coaches present. Shortly after, a video of the new draw—featuring a cameo by Kim "stax" Gu-taek—was posted. The corrected matchups are:

    1-0 Matches:

    • Paper Rex vs NRG
    • Team Liquid vs Gentle Mates

    0-1 Matches:

    • T1 vs EDward Gaming
    • G2 Esports vs XLG Esports

Faria also issued an apology alongside the new bracket:

"The mistake shouldn’t have happened and it took us too long to address it. Ultimately we had to choose between three to four hours of wasted prep or running the rest of the tournament knowing the draw was incorrect. The answer was clear. Apologies to the teams who have to deal with this curveball in an already tight schedule and thanks for being good sports about it."

    Conclusion

While the redraw caused frustration and lost preparation time for the competing teams, Riot Games’ decision to correct the bracket ensures the competitive integrity of Masters Santiago remains intact. Fans are now treated to a blockbuster matchup between Paper Rex and NRG, proving that sometimes, even mistakes can lead to an exciting outcome.
