VALORANT Path to Champions: the new format for 2026 explained
Riot Games is ushering in a new change for VALORANT esports in 2026 through the Path to Champions initiative. This new competitive route replaces Ascension and grants Challenger teams a direct opportunity to qualify for Champions.
After years of tier separation, Path to Champions bridges the gap between Challengers and Tier-1 VALORANT. Instead of fighting through Ascension, Challengers teams now advance directly to their respective Regional League Stage 2 Playoffs.
Regional Slot Allocation
Each VCT territory will send four Challenger teams into the Stage 2 Playoffs, where they’ll face the top competitors of their respective regions for a shot at Champions qualification:
- VCT Americas:
- NA 1st seed and Brazil 1st seed qualify directly.
- LATAM North & South champions compete for one slot.
- Final slot will be filled via an LCQ between NA 2nd, BR 2nd, and LATAM runner-up.
- VCT EMEA: Top four teams determined by Challenger points and placements.
- VCT Pacific: One slot each for SEA, Japan, and Korea.
- The final slot will be filled via an LCQ between South Asia, Oceania, and additional SEA seeds.
- VCT China: No details have been revealed at the time of writing, with Riot stating further details will be released soon.
Many VALORANT fans, especially from South Asia and Oceania, are frustrated with the unfair qualification structure in Pacific. While Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea secure direct playoff slots, South Asia and Oceania must battle through an extra Last Chance Qualifier. Community members argue this decision undermines regional growth, with many calling out Riot for giving “free rides” to weaker regions while stronger South Asian teams face tougher paths.
Financial Support and Global Competition
Riot Games confirmed that every Challenger team qualifying for Stage 2 Playoffs will receive a $75,000 stipend to cover travel, visa, and attendance costs. While Riot will help with logistics, teams remain responsible for securing documentation and accommodations.
All participating rosters should be ready to travel to international hubs and Stage 2 Playoff roadshows scheduled across the Americas, EMEA, Pacific, and China.
Eligibility Rules and Roster Regulations
Academy teams are ineligible for Path to Champions and will lose relegation protection beginning in 2026. Teams finishing last in their Challengers leagues must defend their positions in relegation battles.
Affiliate teams, however, remain eligible and may continue partnerships even after qualifying. Still, no player transfers are permitted between main and affiliate rosters during Stage 2 and Champions roster lock periods.
The removal of relegation protection for Academy teams in 2026 has also drawn criticism from the community, who call it a setback for talent growth. Many argue the change discourages Tier-1 organizations from maintaining academy rosters, increases investment risks, and ultimately weakens the foundation of VALORANT’s developmental ecosystem.
Roster Age and Import Rules
Riot also issued clear player eligibility guidelines to comply with local laws:
- In China, all players must be at least 18 years old across every competition tier.
- In Americas, EMEA, and Pacific, Challenger teams advancing to Stage 2 Playoffs may include players 16 and above, with up to two imports from outside their region. These rules aim to ensure equitable competition while acknowledging regional regulations. Riot also confirmed an ongoing policy review to unify global eligibility standards by the 2027 season.
From Premier to Champions
For aspiring players, the 2026 competitive ladder is clearer than ever. A player can progress from Premier to Challengers, reach the Stage 2 Playoffs, and ultimately fight for the Champions trophy in Shanghai.
By merging the in-game and professional ecosystems, Riot reinforces a unified vision where every competitive player, from ranked grinders to semi-pro organizations, has a tangible path to the world stage.
The Path to Champions initiative marks the beginning of VALORANT’s next era: a world where even the smallest of opportunity can snowball into international glory. With financial support, equalized competition, and new destinations, the 2026 season sets the stage for unprecedented opportunity for Tier-2 teams.
