VALORANT's new "Retake" mode Is here to test your post-plant nerves
VALORANT is getting a brand-new 3v3 game mode called Retake, launching on June 24, 2026, alongside the "new VALORANT map 'Summit,'" and it's built around the single most nerve-wracking moment in any round: the post-plant.
What Is Retake?
Retake strips competitive VALORANT down to its most intense scenario. The Spike is already planted. One team holds the site; the other storms in to defuse. Every round is a pressure cooker with no fluff, no economy phase, and no mid-round plant reads—just pure execution under the clock.
It's a first-to-5-rounds format, with sides swapping every round so both teams experience the full loop of holding and retaking.
How the Rounds Work
Each round starts with the Spike auto-planting at a visible location on site a few seconds in. Planters (attackers) spawn directly on site, see exactly where the Spike lands, and immediately set up defensive positions. Retakers (defenders) spawn at map positions outside the site and have to push in, clear angles, and defuse, all before time runs out. Win conditions are straightforward:
- Planters win by eliminating all Retakers or running the spike timer down.
- Retakers win by defusing or wiping the enemy team.
The Loadout System Keeps Things Fresh
Forget standard buy rounds. Each round, players choose between two randomized cards—one for weapons and armor, one for ability charges. Both pools escalate as the match progresses, meaning early rounds feel grounded while later rounds can get chaotic and high-powered. It adds a draft-style layer of decision-making that keeps every match feeling different.
Map Pool and What's Next
Retake uses single bomb sites pulled from existing maps, with a curated pool that will expand throughout the Act. The mode launches alongside VALORANT's newest map, Summit — though whether Summit itself will be part of the Retake rotation hasn't been confirmed yet.
For players who've always wanted to grind post-plant scenarios without playing a full Unrated match, Retake looks like exactly that outlet.
