VARREL zexy on 2-0 loss to T1: "We didn't play the game we wanted"
VARREL's debut run in Tier 1 VALORANT hit a rough patch as they fell 2-0 to T1 in their opening match. Duelist Jang "zexy" Suk-hyun sat down with THESPIKE after the match to reflect on what went wrong, the jump to tier-1, and where he believes the team can go from here.
"T1 did better than us, and I think we didn't play the game that we wanted. I think we need to raise our form a bit and get better than today."
Note: zexy gave the interview in Korean, and it was translated to English with the help of an on-site translator and AI.
Haven: A Strong Start That Slipped Away
VARREL entered the series with some early momentum on Haven, building a lead before T1 wrestled control back. Zexy acknowledged the team had the right idea going in but couldn't sustain it. But Pearl is where it all fell apart for the rookie squad.
"We thought we prepared a lot and we think we're okay, but the problem was T1's comp; we kind of never met it on the scrim. So we didn't think about how to play against it."
VARREL walked in without a prepared answer for what T1 brought, and the experienced Korean squad made them pay for it. He also added that losing the defensive side on Haven compounded the problem, as the mental weight of that upset carried directly into their Pearl performance.
The Tier-1 Learning Curve
For a squad that graduated from the tier-2 circuit, the jump to the main stage carries a steep adjustment period. Zexy was candid about how different the environment feels.
"When we play aggressive, it worked [in tier-2], but in tier-1 they know how to counter it, and it's kind of tough to counter the counter. Tier-1 teams have a lot of experience, so it's kind of tough for us to get the balance."
With opponents having scouted VARREL's tendencies, the team's go-to strategies became liabilities rather than weapons. "It's difficult for us because the opponent already knew that we were picking a lot," he said.
Stage nerves have also been a new variable added into the mix. Zexy admitted that unlike at Ascension, where he felt composed, the VCT stage has brought a different kind of pressure that he's still learning to manage.
"I’m still looking for how to handle the stress on the stage — I didn't get nervous before, but on the VCT stage, it's kind of different."
Yoru Nerfed Into Irrelevance?
One of the more colorful parts of the conversation came when zexy was asked about the recent Yoru nerfs. As a Duelist, the changes hit close to home.
"Yoru was overpowered, and I think it was necessary to nerf him — but it feels like everything was cut off, so Yoru is bad and nobody's going to use him probably."
It's a sentiment echoed across the regions. With Yoru sidelined, zexy sees the double-Duelist meta as the natural state of the game right now, calling it simply "just good" for any team with strong individual mechanics.
Eyes Forward: T1 Rematch and RRQ
Despite the defeat, zexy's mindset remained competitive. When asked which team he most wanted to face in their upcoming matches, his finger pointed straight to RRQ. But his long-term goal is even more pointed.
"I want to face T1 again."
VARREL have four group stage matches remaining to prove their Tier-1 credentials. If today was a lesson, zexy seems determined to make sure it's not one they need to learn twice.
