Waylay Joins VALORANT: A Prismatic Duelist Built for Speed and Control
After weeks of speculation and teasers, Riot Games has officially introduced Waylay, the latest duelist to join the VALORANT roster. Revealed during the VCT Masters: Bangkok Grand Finals, Waylay represents Thailand as a prismatic Radiant who harnesses the power of light to overwhelm her opponents.
With blazing speed, rapid repositioning, and a unique debuff that slows enemy actions, Waylay brings a fresh take on the entry duelist role. Whether she’s dashing across the battlefield, striking with devastating precision, or escaping in an instant, Waylay is built for high-speed, high-impact gameplay.
Let’s break down her abilities, playstyle, and how she fits into VALORANT’s evolving meta.
Waylay’s Abilities: Speed, Precision, and Control
Waylay’s kit combines aggressive movement tools with a new debuff called Hindering, which slows enemies and reduces their effectiveness in fights. She excels at taking space, disrupting defenders, and escaping dangerous situations.
Refract
Places a beacon of light on the floor. Reactivate to instantly return to the beacon as a mote of pure light, becoming invulnerable while traveling.
- Allows for bold engagements while providing a safe exit.
- Ideal for diving into fights and escaping unscathed.
Light Speed
Prepares for a burst of momentum. Fire to dash forward twice. Alt Fire to dash once. Only the first dash can be used for upward movement.
- A fusion of Jett’s dash and Raze’s satchels, but with more adaptability.
- The first dash enables vertical movement, offering creative angles for attacking or repositioning.
Saturate
Throws a cluster of light that explodes upon hitting the ground, applying Hindering to affected enemies.
- Weakens opponents by reducing their mobility and combat effectiveness.
- Great for slowing site retakes or disrupting enemy positions.
Convergent Paths (Ultimate)
Projects an afterimage that releases a beam of light. After a brief delay, Waylay gains a powerful speed boost, and the beam expands, applying Hindering to all enemies in its path.
- Amplifies Waylay’s speed, allowing her to reposition instantly.
- The wide-area Hindering effect makes enemies easier to eliminate.

Waylay’s Playstyle: A Fast and Unpredictable Duelist
According to June Cuervo, Game Designer at Riot Games, Waylay was designed to fill the "space-taking" duelist role, similar to Jett and Raze. However, she offers a different approach to aggressive entry play.
"When designing Waylay’s dash, I wanted to capture the creativity of Raze’s satchel movement and the speed of Jett’s dash. Waylay’s tool for creating safety for herself, Refract, allows her to take risks and play off of her teammates' utility with confidence after dashing."
How Does Waylay Fit into the Meta?
-
Strong Maps: Icebox, Ascent
- Thrives in tight spaces with multiple dash angles.
- Effective in quick site executions.
-
Double-Duelist Maps: Lotus, Split
- Can pair with Raze for aggressive site takes.
- Strong in coordinated team compositions.
-
Weaker Maps: Breeze, Abyss
- Struggles in wide-open areas with limited cover.
- Jett remains a stronger pick for these maps.
Best Playstyle for Waylay
- Functions as an entry fragger, using her mobility and Hindering effect to gain the upper hand.
- Works best when paired with initiator utility, such as Sova’s recon dart or Omen’s paranoia.
- Unlike other duelists, she can escape risky fights, making her more forgiving for aggressive players.
Final Thoughts
Waylay adds a new layer of strategy to the duelist role, offering speed, debuffs, and creative movement options. While she won’t replace Jett or Raze, she provides a fresh alternative for players who enjoy fast, aggressive plays with a focus on control.
With Season 2025 Act II launching on March 5, it won’t be long before players can test Waylay’s potential in both ranked and pro play.
