All VCT China teams eliminated from VALORANT Champions Shanghai
October 1 was a sad day for China, as both Xi Lai Gaming and TYLOO were knocked out of the tournament. However, things only got worse on October 2, as the remaining teams, EDward Gaming and JD Gaming got also eliminated, meaning all Chinese teams are now out.
Even China’s biggest hope has not been enough
Even EDG, the only Chinese team to ever win a Champions tournament, had no chance this year. The match against Global Esports was heavily one-sided, with the Pacific First Seed completely rolling over EDG as Summit ended 13-5 and Sunset 13-6.
Go "UdoTan" Kyung-won put on another great performance, continuing to be GE’s best performer at the tournament. Aside from autumn, who struggled to find his footing in the series, every player on the team had a strong showing.
EDG was in total darkness, with every player on the roster finishing with a negative KDA except the usual Zheng "ZmjjKK" Yongkang, who once again tried his best to give China some hope. Zheng "ZmjjKK" Yongkang’s addition was not enough to change the fate of a team that has struggled for months and failed to perform well even in VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - China Stage 2.
T1 survive a scare against JDG
Despite the win, T1 had a terrible showing against JD Gaming, who looked completely out of place during the match against JD Gaming. The top performer for the Korean team was Zheng "ZmjjKK" Yongkang, who carried the team in Game 1 and helped them pull off a huge comeback.
Then on Abyss, it was a total blackout for T1, who got run down with a 13-3 score, an unexpected result for a series that should have been pretty easy for them on paper. Luckily, on Haven, Zheng "ZmjjKK" Yongkang stepped up and, with 23 kills, carried his team to victory. JDG were the last standing team for China, but after the loss, every team from the host region has been eliminated, marking a dark chapter in Chinese VALORANT history.
A historic failure for Chinese VALORANT
This was the worst performance by a single region in Champions history, as China finished the tournament with only two maps won out of 16. All of this happened in front of a home crowd that tried to support its teams with screams and chants throughout every match. For some moments, it looked like the support could make a difference, but the gap between China and the other regions was simply too large.
For the second year in a row, Chinese teams failed to make an impact at the most important event of the competitive year. This could raise questions about whether Riot should adjust its seeding system. As much as having four teams from each region at Champions gives every region a chance to compete, China’s results at the event suggest that its teams are currently struggling to match the level of the other regions.
Teams like Leviatán could have offered a different level of competition at the event than XLG or some of the other Chinese teams. League of Legends already uses a similar approach, with Korea and China receiving more seeds than other regions based on their international results. A more merit based system could give fans more matches between the strongest teams from around the world.
