ENVY Demon1 rejects the comeback narrative: "I've been the same for the last three years"
Max "Demon1" Mazanov has been one of the key figures in ENVY’s success during the VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Americas Stage 2 Upper Bracket run, but MIBR proved to be a major challenge.
In the match that would have secured their Playoffs qualification, ENVY lost, sending them to the Lower Bracket. While there is still a chance to advance, the path is now much more difficult, as the player acknowledged in an interview with THESPIKE.
A loss is a loss
ENVY had a strong start to the series, securing a convincing victory on the first map, but the team failed to carry that momentum into the second. Despite a close result, it wasn't enough to mount a serious challenge in the deciding map, as ENVY fell short and missed out on the chance to secure a spot in the Playoffs through the Upper Bracket.
Last time we played them, we were on different roles and, honestly, a completely different team. This time, we focused on doing our own thing. Practicing, improving, and fixing the mistakes we made before. Obviously, some of those mistakes are still there, but all we can do is keep working on them and continue improving.
Despite the two new additions to the roster and the limited time to adapt, Demon1 believes the current meta suits ENVY well, with every player feeling comfortable in their respective roles.
The obvious answer with nightz is firepower. He is really good mechanically. With GLYPH, he's got really good ideas. He's been improving on the in-game leading and he has been trying to be the voice for the team. We follow his calls.
The hope is still alive
Loss and all, hope of qualifying for the Playoffs is still alive. Demon1 acknowledges that the team is still making plenty of mistakes that need to be addressed, but their chances are far from over. The road ahead will be more difficult, with every match potentially being their last of the season, but ENVY remain confident in their ability to keep fighting.
We obviously have our own way of playing the game, and we’re just playing to our comfort. There’s always a chance. We’re not out yet. A loss is a loss, and it sucks, to be honest. This loss just made things harder for us. Eventually, you’re going to lose, and you have to learn from those mistakes. Today, we didn’t really play that well and made a lot of mistakes. There’s room for improvement. We just need to avoid those mistakes next time and keep fighting.
Looking ahead to the next match, Demon1 said ENVY’s priority is becoming more adaptable and improving their preparation against different team compositions. According to him, one of the key reasons behind their struggles in the deciding map was MIBR’s compositional change, something the team wants to be better equipped to handle.
THESPIKE: What's one aspect of your game that you're still unhappy with and want to improve for the next matches?
Demon1: “Just repetition. Playing against different comps. Obviously, they had a different compostion on Split today, so we’ve got to play more compositions in scrims and adapt more to the enemy team’s comps.”
The same Demon1 as always
Demon1’s return to Tier 1 has been one of the most talked-about storylines in 2026. However, for the player, it feels like he never really left. Demon1 doesn't believe there is a better version of himself now, insisting that he has remained the same over the past three years. At the same time, he maintains that individual performance is closely tied to the team’s overall environment.
Individual performance depends on the team. I mean, if you're on a better team, you're gonna get to shine more as an individual. But if you're playing on a bad team overall, everyone's gonna play bad. I haven't changed anything in my routine. I've been the same for the last three years.
In 2023, Demon1 won the VCT 2023 - Champions with Evil Geniuses. Since then, neither the team nor Demon1 have managed to secure another regional or international title. The player made a brief return to the international stage at the end of 2025, when he stood in for Ilya "vo0kashu" Ushakov on Dragon Ranger Gaming due to visa issues.
After also standing in for Cloud9, Demon1 has now fully returned to Tier 1 with ENVY and must secure five consecutive victories to qualify for VALORANT Champions 2026.
VCT Americas 2026
