G2 Gozen DrewSpark on GCC 2026 exit: “There’s no shame in losing to the World Champions”
In their fifth appearance at the VALORANT Game Changers 2026 - Championship tournament, G2 Gozen recorded their worst-ever finish. Following a disappointing campaign, the team’s head coach, Drew "DrewSpark" Spark-Whitworth, spoke to THESPIKE about the team’s performance, the gap between their regional success and international results, and more.
A disappointing GCC 2026 campaign
Despite starting the bracket with a game advantage, G2 Gozen failed to capitalize on the opportunity. They opened their campaign against MIBR GC but suffered a defeat that sent them straight to the Lower Bracket.
Facing another Brazilian side, Team Liquid Brazil, in their next match, G2 Gozen suffered a second consecutive loss, bringing their GCC 2026 campaign to an early end.
THESPIKE: What went wrong for G2 Gozen at GCC 2026?
I think ultimately a lot of what's been going wrong today and just this tournament in general is playing with confidence. On our defenses especially, we played a little bit not to lose. In doing so, we gave the attack side far too much space. Against a confident team willing to take that space and make their own plays, we're always going to be on the back foot. I think that's reflected in a lot of our defense scorelines so far.
Today was no different, even on Sunset with a big lead we struggled to convert that energy and that confidence into a good defense. Ultimately, I think it just came down to a lot of thinking too hard about what to do instead of just naturally playing the game. That's just something that comes with getting into a bit of a rhythm which we weren't able to do this tournament."
THESPIKE: Do you think G2 Gozen underperformed, or did their opponents simply play better on the day?
DrewSpark: "The other teams, including MIBR, definitely played better. It certainly wasn't a matter of us simply dropping the ball. I do think we could have played a lot better, and that's where much of the disappointment comes from. We felt like we didn't reach our potential. But Liquid and MIBR are both extremely strong teams, and I expect them to continue to go far."
Brazilian dominance
Even in EMEA, DrewSpark acknowledged that G2 Gozen faced challenges, including against newer teams on the scene. However, on the international stage, the Brazilian teams appeared better prepared to handle the challenges of the tournament.
I mean, even in the EMEA, it was a struggle. If I'm being honest, there were a few really strong teams, and even some new teams that came up and gave us a lot of challenges. For us to even beat first seeds at this tournament was not something we would have expected. Again, I wouldn't really say it was so much a regional matchup. I just think that the Brazilian teams are more prepared to win this tournament at this point, or I guess in a much better flow state than we were able to be today.
At the same time, DrewSpark acknowledged that there is no shame in losing to the reigning world champions. With every Lower Bracket match carrying elimination stakes, G2 Gozen’s head coach admitted that the Brazilian side deserved the win, having proved their superiority throughout the series.
I mean, there's no shame in losing to Liquid. They're the World Champions, and they've been winning everything this year. It's unfortunate that we had to face them so early. I'm sure they felt the same way, too. Ultimately, they deserved to win, so there's no shame in that. I think the disappointment on our side comes more from the fact that we didn't play our best. When you lose a match because you haven't performed at your best, that's always going to be the most disappointing part.
