"Prepping against PRX, we definitely knew that they would try to do a lot of mini games, and we also expected the situation to become very chaotic. And on Abyss, I think we were doing okay, but on Ascent, I think they were playing the whole game at their own pace, and we were kind of dragged into it."

The journey to the VCT stage is as much a mental battle as it is a physical or tactical one. "For me it was definitely a great experience to be able to be on this big stage. Before I had this opportunity, I thought I was really good at controlling my own mind, but it turned out different. So I really had to think about how to become more solid as a person to be able to fight on this stage, and I think I learned a lot from that."

The Tier 1 vs Tier 2 Debate

Having played against both types of opposition recently, Cloudy now has a clear perspective on what separates the elite from the aspirants. Tier-1 teams excel at clinical decision-making and risk management.

"Tier 1 teams are definitely better at making decisions in telling if they are in a good or bad situation. And if they need to fight, they are trying to be sure that they are fighting to keep the advantage for the team."

Meanwhile, tier-2 is defined by unpredictability and chaos, which can lead to unexpected variables but lacks discipline.

"However, when it comes to tier 2, I think there are a lot more different variables than in tier 1. There are more unexpected peeks and situations in tier 2.”

Focus on the Horizon

As the VCT prepares for major format changes next year, many tier-2 teams and players are already looking to the future. However, the stress of competing against the tier-1 teams has given Cloudy little time to think about anything else. That being said, he is determined to give his all regardless of what format lies ahead.
