Paper Rex upset G2 Esports 2-0 in VALORANT Masters Toronto playoffs opener
Paper Rex made a statement on Day 1 of the VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Masters Toronto 2025 playoffs, beating G2 Esports 2-0 and advancing in the upper bracket. The win marked PRX’s first-ever series victory against this G2 roster, having previously fallen to them at VCT 2024 - Masters Shanghai and VCT 2024 - Champions 2024.
The match saw PRX lean into their signature aggression and chaotic tempo, with creative site hits and double-teleport plays catching G2 off-guard, especially on Split.
“We're a little older and wiser now. I think the boys did fantastic today.” PRX coach Alex "alecks" Salle.
Rookie Firepower on Full Display
All eyes were on Patrick "PatMen" Mendoza, PRX’s newest addition, who delivered a star-making performance. The Filipino rookie led his team in frags with 34 kills, 20 assists, and a 1.14 rating, proving vital in clutch rounds and aggressive entries.
“Earlier, I felt nervous and I told everyone… but even if I felt nervous, I knew they had my back.”
On Split, his impact was especially noticeable, drawing praise from G2 themselves.
“Can someone sit this PatMen guy down?” G2 IGL Jacob "valyn" Batio
G2 Falter in Playoff Debut
Despite Trent "trent" Cairns’s stellar effort - 39 kills, 11 assists, and also a 1.14 rating - G2 couldn’t keep up with PRX’s creative attacks and disruptive utility usage. Coach Josh "JoshRT" Lee cited a lack of discipline and a delay to adapt as key issues.
“We anticipated their aggression, but it was a little too late. We didn’t have enough room.”
The loss drops G2 into the lower bracket, where they now face elimination against XLG Esports. For PRX, this now means a match against Sentinels, the other remaining Americas team . With confidence, firepower, and cohesion clicking into place, Paper Rex might just be peaking at the right time.
