How to Download League of Legends
League of Legends is arguably one of the most popular Esports in the world, and you want to give it a go? Well here is how to download League of Legends, so you can get going!
League of Legends is vastly popular around the globe, with statistics showing over 117 million different monthly players, the game is still growing, and by the sounds of it, you are the latest in a long line of potential League of Legends professionals.
Well, it all starts with downloading League of Legends, as you can’t really get good at the MOBA title without doing so. Here is how to download League of Legends, broken down into simple steps.
How to download League of Legends

Downloading League of Legends is a very simple process, and it doesn’t require a multi-game launcher, such as Battle.net or Steam. Instead you need to go to the League of Legends download page, on the official website.
After you have gone to that page, you want to make an account if you don’t have one already. This is because you can’t play the game without having an account. Make sure to choose a username you like, as you can’t change it all that often!
The next step is to either select “Download for Windows” or “Download Mac Installer”. This obviously changes based on whatever computer you are using, so make sure you download the right one.
There you have it, League of Legends is downloading. Once the file downloads into your selected area on your computer, you want to run the installer and wait for it to complete downloading, and then you are ready to complete the tutorial and play League of Legends for the very first time.

Can you get League of Legends on Console?

So, we mentioned that you could either select “Download for Windows” or “Download Mac Installer” when choosing how to download League of Legends, and we know a lot of you are console gamers, so we decided to let you know about whether or not you can download League of Legends on a console.
Sadly, the short answer is no. Whilst Riot Games have had links with Microsoft and the Xbox Games Pass for exclusive League of Legends rewards, we highly doubt that this relationship will delve into League of Legends being available on a console in the future.
This is because League of Legends is so delicately designed and played, that playing on a controller is arguably impossible, and when you consider the amount of buttons you need to press in quick succession in League of Legends, even for a basic combo on a champion such as Lux, you can understand why a controller won’t be able to reliably handle all of this.
If you do feel like playing League of Legends, but you don’t have a computer to download League of Legends on, you can actually play the official Riot Games mobile version of League of Legends, League of Legends: Wild Rift for free.
Fair warning, however, if you already play League of Legends, and you want to play League of Legends: Wild Rift, your progress does not carry over. This is because the two games are considered completely separate entities, and actually have quite a few differences.
These were accommodated for mobile gaming, so the small intricacies of League of Legends are dulled down to be played on a mobile screen, without a keyboard and mouse.
Is League of Legends free to play?

Speaking of being free, League of Legends is and has always been a free to play video game, so when you download the game, you don’t have to pay a penny!
Be careful however, as there are a lot of micro-transactions in League of Legends, whether it be champions, champion skins, or even cosmetics such as Summoner Icons, League of Legends is very inclusive of micro-transactions.
How to download Teamfight Tactics

Whilst Teamfight Tactics isn’t strictly League of Legends, the auto-chess spin-off released in 2019 is heavily revolvant around League of Legends. It uses the same champions for the most part, and is actually played in the same client as League of Legends.
This means that to download Teamfight Tactics, all you need to do is download the regular League of Legends client, and when League of Legends installs, so does Teamfight Tactics.
You can also get Teamfight Tactics as a separate mobile application on your phone or tablet, so you can play that on the go too!
Unlike League of Legends and League of Legends: Wild Rift, Teamfight Tactics on the computer and Teamfight Tactics on your mobile device are linked, meaning you will be able to log into the same account, have the same ranked progress, and more importantly, use all of your hard-earned Little Legends on both your phone and your computer.
Make sure you do not log into the game on your phone when you are playing on your computer, or vice versa, as the system will recognise you as being logged in elsewhere, closing your application mid-game on the original device!
Is League of Legends free to download?
Yes, League of Legends is completely free to download. You can go to Riot Games' official website and install the game without paying anything. You do not need to buy the game or pay any subscription fee. Once you download it, you can start playing right away. You will only spend money if you choose to buy skins, emotes, or other cosmetic items. Check out our guide on how to buy Riot Points for more information!
Why can't I download League of Legends?
If you have trouble downloading League of Legends, it usually happens for one of these reasons:
- Not Enough Space on Your PC: Make sure you have enough free space. The game needs around 9–10 GB to download and around 22 GB after installation. Keep at least 25 GB free to be safe.
- Antivirus or Firewall Blocking the Installer: Your antivirus or firewall might block the installer by mistake. Try turning them off while you download and install the game. After that, turn them back on to stay protected.
- Weak Internet Connection: Slow or unstable internet can stop the download. Restart your router or switch to a wired connection. This usually makes the download smoother.
If none of these work, visit Riot Games’ support page for more help.
