Esports World Cup 2025 playoffs preview and predictions
After two thrilling days of group stage action, the EWC VALORANT - Esports World Cup 2025 has delivered surprises, heartbreaks, and clutch moments. With just eight teams remaining in contention, the stage is set for a high-stakes single-elimination playoff where only one will walk away with the $500,000 prize and 1,000 EWC Club Points.
Group Stage Recap: Shocks and Shuffles
The group stage was a battlefield of upsets and turnarounds, with some of VALORANT’s biggest names crashing out early and new faces stepping up.
Group A, dubbed the “Group of Death,” lived up to its name. G2 Esports, one of the top contenders, failed to win a single match and bowed out in shocking fashion. Karmine Corp, on the other hand, made a surprise playoff run, outlasting G2 and Bilibili Gaming to advance alongside VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Masters Toronto 2025 champions Paper Rex.
In Group B, Sentinels bounced back from an opening loss to BBL Esports, eliminating both XLG Esports, the VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - China Stage 1 champions, and DRX. BBL, making their international return since VCT 2023 - LOCK//IN, advanced undefeated.
Group C featured one of the biggest surprises of the tournament: NRG swept through the group with dominant wins over Team Heretics and Rex Regum Qeon, earning a flawless 2-0 record. Team Heretics, despite a rocky start, recovered and eliminated Pacific champions RRQ, an important bounce-back for the team after a weak international season.
Group D offered fewer surprises, as Fnatic and Gen.G Esports advanced as expected. EDward Gaming and 100 Thieves faltered, with EDG continuing their disappointing 2024 campaign by missing Masters Toronto and now exiting EWC early.
Playoff Bracket Set: Opening Fixtures and Predictions
With the quarterfinals upon us, let’s dive into the opening matchups and what fans can expect from these high-stakes battles.
Fnatic vs Karmine Corp [11 am CET / 2 am PT]
A classic EMEA matchup kicks things off. Karmine Corp’s dream run continues, thanks in large part to IGL Matias "Saadhak" Delipetro, who delivered huge performances against G2 and BLG. The former LOUD captain appears to be back in form, and KC have looked far stronger than expected.
But standing across from them is Fnatic, the reigning VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - EMEA Stage 1 champions and Masters Toronto finalists. With Kajetan "kaajak" Haremski and Emir "Alfajer" Ali Beder in MVP-level form, Fnatic cruised through their group, beating 100 Thieves and dismantling Gen.G in a clean 2-0.
While Karmine Corp has overperformed, taking down Fnatic in a Bo3 is a tall order. Unless Fnatic stumble, they’re favorites to move on comfortably.
Prediction: Fnatic 2-0 Karmine Corp
Paper Rex vs Sentinels [11 am CET / 2 am PT]
This is the marquee matchup of the playoffs; a rematch of their Masters Toronto clash, where Paper Rex swept Sentinels on their way to the championship. Now, the two face off again, but both teams are different beasts.
Paper Rex are riding high from their Toronto win and went undefeated in groups. Jason "f0rsakeN" Susanto and Ilya "something" Petrov are firing on all cylinders, with the team’s aggressive, high-risk style continuing to give opponents headaches.
Sentinels, after a shaky start, turned things around with wins over XLG and DRX. Marshall "N4RRATE" Massey and Zachary "zekken" Patrone have stepped up in the fragging department, and this squad tends to grow stronger as tournaments progress.
Still, Paper Rex’s structure and star power give them the edge. Expect a closer match than in Toronto, but Paper Rex should narrowly edge it out in three maps.
Prediction: Paper Rex 2-1 Sentinels
NRG vs Gen.G Esports [2:15 pm CET / 5:15 am PT]
NRG’s resurgence has been one of the tournament’s best stories. After nearly a year in the wilderness, they’ve returned with confidence, dispatching Heretics and RRQ convincingly. Logan "skuba" Jenkins and Adam "mada" Pampuch have been standout performers, giving NRG fans hope for a deep run.
But Gen.G, the VCT 2024 - Masters Shanghai winners, present a much tougher test. While they dropped a series to Fnatic in groups, they recovered with a Bo3 win over EDG and remain one of the most dangerous Pacific squads. Kim "t3xture" Na-ra continues to be one of the world’s top duelists, and with clutch support from Kim "Karon" Won-tae and Jung "Foxy9" Jae-sung, they look tournament-ready.
NRG’s run may end here unless they pull off something spectacular. Gen.G’s firepower and experience are likely to overwhelm them.
Prediction: Gen.G 2-0 NRG
BBL Esports vs Team Heretics [2:15 pm CET / 5:15 am PT]
On paper, this EMEA clash should lean toward Team Heretics. But their shaky start against NRG raises concerns. While they bounced back strongly to beat Titan Esports Club and RRQ, inconsistency lingers, especially with Benjy "benjyfishy" David Fish’s dip in form.
BBL Esports have been one of the feel-good stories of the event. Their return to international play was triumphant, with victories over Sentinels and DRX. Burak "LêwN" Alkan in particular has stepped up massively, often carrying rounds with multi-kill heroics.
However, playoff VALORANT rarely allows solo carry efforts to shine. Heretics, despite recent troubles, are a more structured and experienced roster. If Mert "Wo0t" Alkan and Dominykas "MiniBoo" Lukasevicius continue their form, they should be able to withstand BBL’s fire and close out the series, though not without a fight.
Prediction: Team Heretics 2-1 BBL Esports
With eight teams remaining, Paper Rex, Fnatic, and Gen.G lead the race for the Esports World Cup title. Sentinels or Heretics might upset, but Pacific dominance looms. Expect thrilling, high-stakes VALORANT as one team rises above the rest.
