FUT Esports eliminate World Champions NRG in Masters London Swiss Stage upset
VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Masters London 2026's Swiss Stage saved its biggest shock for last. On Day 5, EMEA dark horses FUT Esports eliminated reigning world champions NRG with a stunning 2-1 reverse sweep, booking their playoff berth in what was arguably the tournament's most dramatic match so far.
NRG Draw First Blood on Lotus
FUT's map pick of Lotus opened the series in tense fashion. The Turkish side built an early lead, but NRG steadied themselves to level the half at 6-6. The second half proved equally tight, but NRG's attack side edged ahead just enough to close it out 13-11 and take the early series lead.
The Overtime That Changed Everything
NRG's pick of Haven was supposed to be their cushion, but instead, it became their undoing. FUT came out swinging on attack, racing out to a 7-5 halftime lead. NRG flipped the script on defense, clawing their way back and threatening to run away with the map entirely. But FUT refused to fold. They pushed the map into overtime—the first of the entire tournament—and, in stunning fashion, closed out a clutch 3v5 in Round 25 and sealed a 14-12 win to level the series.
Xeus Delivers the Killing Blow on Fracture
The decider on Fracture told a story of momentum, collapse, and one defining moment. FUT looked like a team possessed from the jump, riding a four-round opening streak to a 7-5 halftime lead before steamrolling to 12-5 and sitting on map point. Then came an NRG timeout that briefly breathed life back into the reigning champions. Six consecutive rounds later, the score was 12-11 and another overtime loomed. But this time, it never came. Yusuf "xeus" Doğan Gözgen delivered a jaw-dropping 3k to close out the map in regulation and complete the reverse sweep.
A Sobering Exit for the World Champions
For NRG, this is a brutal wake-up call. Coming in as one of the tournament favorites, they now exit in 9th-10th place with just a single win over Xi Lai Gaming to their name. While their 2026 season has been defined by consistent third-place finishes, this group stage elimination stands out as a rare blemish on an otherwise near-flawless resume.
That said, if there's one thing NRG have always had, it's resilience—the very quality that powered their VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Valorant Champions title run. With the EWC - Esports World Cup 2026 and VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Americas Stage 2 still to come, the road to defending that crown just got a lot steeper.
