"My goal now is just to let them (G2) lift this Champs trophy with me," - jawgemo on mentality ahead of Champions
The opening match of the playoffs for VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Americas Stage 2 saw the ever-consistent G2 Esports make light work of a revamped 100 Thieves, only allowing the thieves nine rounds in a quick 2-0 victory. While G2 have already qualified for VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 - Valorant Champions, a top two placing in playoffs would allow them to secure a higher seed for the largest of the year. Meanwhile, 100T are fighting for their own Champions qualification through playoffs.
Following this swift victory, Alexander "jawgemo" Mor sat down with us to shed some light on how he keeps up his consistent impressive performances on Yoru, his thoughts facing off against ex-Evil Geniuses teammate Ethan "Ethan" Arnold, the value that Andrej "babybay" Francisty has added to the team, as well as the top three teams he wants to play at Champions.
jawgemo on individual consistency, addition of babybay, and the top three teams he wants to play at Champions
THESPIKE: You had an amazing performance throughout the series. How have you kept your consistent form throughout the year without it really slipping?
jawgemo: Keeping consistency has been, I would say, it's a little bit hard in my opinion. It's been a lot of ups and downs, especially from last year, from my consistency last year to this year. I've seen the improvement, but I always give myself the standard of just trying to be the same person day by day and figure out "how do I help the boys out?" because obviously I'm going to eventually pop off. That's kind of what happened in 2023. I was just consistent enough until the match mattered.
The routine I have is just basically playing every day after practice and keeping my form up. I don't really believe in burnout. My parents taught me that growing up. I mean, they worked 15 hours a day, still try to take care of me after that. I've been on that routine since 15. Working at the shop, figuring out what they need to do, go to school, still play games, whatever the case is, and try to excel in life because we don't really have that much time in life.
So, I'm just trying to make the most of it, try to make the people around me that love me happy. And I think now I found a new group of guys that love me for who I am. And I'm just trying to show out for them, and we're getting closer and closer. Bangkok was the first stage and our first time I almost felt that trophy again and I know watching them get sad not winning it. I mean, my goal now is just to let them lift this Champs trophy with me.
THESPIKE: Do you think there's a there's been a noticeable shift going from EG to G2 in terms of your routine and mental?
jawgemo: I definitely think it's a lot more information I'm taking in. I learned that I excel pretty well whenever there's a lot of information being put in my brain. The information that Josh puts in our head and makes us better players, better IQ, is what really matters. And I think learning that process of actually taking in the information, being coachable as a player and excelling whenever it matters.
I mean, I would say Christine "Potter" Chi also did that too, but I already, let's say, finished my chapter with her. So, that 2024 year, maybe I was slowing down on some of that stuff. And obviously getting a new coach, new team, you want to learn about everything again. So I think that kind of just revamped my career again.
THESPIKE: How are you guys planning on approaching your next match against NRG who are looking like one of the best teams in Americas?
jawgemo: For me personally, I'm ready to play against Ethan's IGL. I know they have a good system going on, but I think I want to see how I can exploit that because I'm very good at exploiting these teams whenever the pressure is high. I mean, it's playoffs, right? So, that's my goal. Figure out what Ethan's tendencies are when he's calling, how to out-call him or be a step ahead of him.
THESPIKE: As one of the pros with the most hours on Yoru, where do you think his place is in the meta right now and how have you felt playing him the past couple of months?
jawgemo: I definitely think using Yoru is a harder game to play, but it's the game that G2 plays. I also get to excel the spots that I think where I shine, which is like the chaos, the fakes, whatever the case is. And I'm doing all that and now I can go back to my team across the map because I have a good lineup to TP out.
So, it's definitely harder because solo duelist is harder. I mean, look at our Haven comp. I'm solo duelist and have a Omen flash to get in, maybe a Fade eye. I think now I learned it. I went through the worst and I went through the highs as well. And now I'm just sitting there like kind of just waiting for the next match, waiting for the "who am I playing next?," "how can I beat that team?" I think Yoru's all about mind manipulation and I think I'm good at doing that.
THESPIKE: What would you say are the core values babybay has brought to your team?
jawgemo: babybay brings that factor of being hype, being confident, giving you the right compliments, giving you the right reads too actually. And that kind of helps Valyn get comfortable and figure out what he has to call. And if nothing's working, we still have somebody as a X factor, not me, somebody else as well to call something else. And that's what babybay brings as well. He brings that X factor of calling something for a play. He's confident in his shot. And we need that.
When we would be down like 0-5 a long time ago, we would all be depressed and then it would go down to 0-7. We're still feeling down and then we start coming back because then we start getting hype. So with babybay, we stopped getting shut down and actually [continue] being shut down. Now, we get shut down and get back into it. We lost like what three thrifties today, but we still won right after that. He's one of those people that can just always keep the energy high and balance actually excelling because of that because he's so confident and that was just unlucky, whatever the case is. So, he brings a lot of value in that.
THESPIKE: What's one team that immediately springs to mind when you think of who do you want to play at Champs?
jawgemo: Obviously it's the team that knocked us out in Bangkok, T1. I want that revenge regardless of the team not being all the same. It was a sad day at Bangkok—I want to play them in groups, get them out early.
And then Fnatic if they make it up there. If they make it to like the Grand Finals, I need my revenge against Emir "Alfajer" Ali Beder. I've never beaten Alfajer yet, so that's kind of been one of my goals.
Oh, Paper Rex too—I would say top three would be Fnatic, Paper Rex, and T1, in that order.
THESPIKE: Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us, jawgemo. Best of luck on your next match.
