A flower that never bloomed: Why Miks never found his place in the competitive meta

One. That is how many times Miks was played in Stage 2 across all VCT regions. After failing to find a place in the meta, Miks has been virtually entirely absent from competitive play.

But why? Agents like Gekko, Reyna, and Veto struggle to find their place in competitive play because of their poor kits; Miks’ numbers, however, are on another level. Let’s break down the reasons behind his low pick rate.

    Controllers Live in Omen's Shadow

It’s almost always been like this. Omen has been the king of Smokes Agents since his release. With an average 64,03% pick rate in Stage 2 worldwide, he is the most-picked agent in Tier-1 pro play. And the reason is simple: his kit is the strongest among Controllers, without any doubt.

Playing Omen means you’re not stuck on a supportive smoker like Astra; you’re free. Crazy teleport plays, Paranoia — which is arguably the best flash in the game — and rechargeable smokes. Those elements give you a lot more freedom when it comes to creating plays.

Viper is the second choice after Omen, as her wall is insanely powerful in the current meta, as it’s not only vast but can be activated from any part of the map. Combined with her Snake Bite, her ability to stop a site push is much better than that of Miks.

For all those reasons, Miks has really low value, as even smokers like Astra and Brimstone struggle to find their place in this meta.

To fully understand why he has failed to find a place in the current meta, though, we first need to break down what modern team compositions actually demand from a Controller

The match above shows the one and only time Miks was picked in the VCT 2026 Stage 2 across all regions.

    A disappointing kit

This is where problems start to show up. Miks has a very dysfunctional kit in pro play. First, his M-Pulse is not great for two reasons:

    • It’s easy to break.

    • Healing has low value in pro play.

Not only is his M-Pulse easy to break, but a competitive player will flick to it in milliseconds. Moreover, healing is useless if basically everyone shoots their opponent in the head.

"I thought the skill setup of the character itself was decent, but when I actually used him, there weren’t many useful abilities like stun, healing, or speed buffs, so this is why I think his pick rate is low." - VARREL's Shin "oonzmlp" Sang-beom on Miks

This is also why an agent like Sage isn’t picked often; although we do see her on certain maps only for her wall and slows, which are strong against very aggressive compositions.

This is a point that even Karmine Corp’s assistant coach Simone "simoz" Giovannini explained:

“The character simply has easily breakable utilities, and every smoker used in the competitive play is better for utility volume. Miks has a good ultimate, but this doesn’t match any of the standards to be played in competition.” - Karmine Corp’s assistant coach Simone "simoz" Giovannini

That’s not all; Miks also lacks global presence. Controllers like Astra and Omen can place smokes from faraway points of the map; Miks he can’t. His kit is localized, so it’s hard to stall a push or create pressure on the map if his abilities are not in range.

Miks can't keep up with modern compositions

When we reached out to Hector "FrosT" Rosario, Head Coach of FULL SENSE, he stated that Miks' kit just simply doesn't let him keep up with

"Miks is simply an agent used to show how creative you are. It’s only viable if you use him to stun areas that enemies wouldn’t be able to detect. The balance in the game is at its worst it’s ever been. The top 5 most-played comps have a couple of these agents: Neon/Phoenix/Chamber/Cypher. Miks cannot keep up with the strength of these agents. He can’t even support them. His ultimate is useless, and the abilities are weaker than most kits from across the board.”

In short, Miks doesn’t fit VALORANT’s current meta. The game is fast-paced and rewards volume, speed, and reliable forms of utility. Teams build compositions around Agents that create immediate value: entry speed, site lockdown, frag potential, and smokes that enable all of these. Miks’ creative stuns and fragile utility don’t scale with that pace.

If defending, players want the chance to deny enemies from pushing a site. Ome's Paranoia or an Astra's pull are both better at doing that than any ability in Miks' kit. When attacking, it’s a similar case: healing has less value than a teleport or a global smoke combined with a flash.

His ultimate is the only ability that’s arguably acceptable, but it requires eight skill points, which is a lot. And that’s not all: it has a small cast time, which allows opponents to dodge it.

Conclusion: Do teams even try to play Miks?

As TYLOO's Sushant "Ominous" Jha told us:

“To be honest, whenever we come up with a new comp for any map, we never even think about Miks; usually its always Omen, Astra, Viper or Clove. His low pick rate, I feel, is more to do with his kit. Harmonize seems very useless to me. His ultimate is alright but has limited use case in my opinion. All in all, I feel his kit and abilities are decent, but once you factor in and compare to what other Controllers offer — universal smokes and more stalling power, etc.— he just seems subpar, and hence is often overlooked."

As stated above, Miks' kit just isn’t strong enough to compete with other Controllers. Teams aren’t even trying to fit him into a composition, because there’s simply no reason to.

Controllers like Omen, Astra, and Viper are more than good enough for the current meta. If Riot wants to give Miks room to be played in pro play, a big shakeup to his kit looks necessary.
