Cloud9 part ways with penny mid-Stage 1 in shock roster move
Cloud9 have announced the departure of Erik "penny" Penny from their VALORANT roster, completely blindsiding the VCT Americas community. The announcement, made on X, comes at one of the most unusual moments possible, right in the thick of VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Americas Stage 1, with Week 4 just getting underway.
Roster moves are never truly surprising in esports, but the timing of this one is hard to ignore. As NRG and Evil Geniuses battle to keep their tournament lives alive, Cloud9 have decided to eliminate someone in their own way, by cutting a player while the season is still very much in progress. Mid-season departures of this nature are rare in franchised leagues, and the lack of a clear explanation from the organization has only amplified the speculation swirling around the move.
Cloud9 stated only that they are "mutually parting ways with [Penny] as the team rebuilds and moves in a different direction," offering thanks for his contributions but little else in the way of clarity.
High Hopes, Disappointing Results
Coming into 2026, Cloud9 looked like a team with genuine potential. Under the in-game leadership of Jordan "Zellsis" Montemurro, the squad showed signs of life at VALORANT Champions Tour 2026 - Americas Kickoff, finishing in sixth place, an improvement over their struggles seen in 2025. For a brief moment, it seemed like Cloud9 had found their footing.
Stage 1, however, has told a different story so far. Currently sitting at 1-2 in Group Alpha, their sole win came via a surprising upset over MIBR—a result that, in hindsight, may have masked deeper issues within the roster. Back-to-back losses to Leviatán and ENVY have exposed those cracks, and it appears the organization has decided that a change, however disruptive, is necessary.
Whether penny was seen as the root of those struggles or simply the clearest variable to address remains unclear, but the timing suggests this decision was either not made lightly or perhaps was made too hastily.
Scrambling for a Substitute
The immediate logistical challenge Cloud9 face is just as pressing as the long-term roster question. With a match against LOUD scheduled just two days away, the organization has very little time to source a substitute. They could turn to Rahul "curry" Nemani, a former stand-in for the team back in 2023 who currently works as a content creator for Leviatán, though Cloud9 have not confirmed any signing.
As for a permanent replacement, the organization has given no indication of who they are targeting. That silence, combined with the mid-season timing, raises real questions about how prepared Cloud9 are to execute this rebuild while still competing in a high-stakes league environment. For now, the community watches and waits, but Cloud9's path forward just got a lot more uncertain.
