Why were Apex Legends voice actors on strike?
The strike began because the game developers asked voice actors to let their voices train artificial intelligence models. More than thirty Apex Legends voice actors refused to accept this demand. They said it would remove their control over how their voices are used and reduce fair payment for their work. The actors wanted strong rules about AI and better protection of their rights.
They pointed to three main issues:
- AI training without consent: The actors feared their voices could be recorded and used to train AI without their permission.
- No clear protection against AI misuse: They warned that company proposals had loopholes that allowed AI copies of their voices to appear in games or media without approval.
- Low pay and weak ownership rights: They wanted fair pay and the right to decide how their voices are used and sold.
This strike showed how new technology creates risks for creative workers. The actors’ actions pushed game studios to rethink how they use AI and how they protect human talent. Many players and industry groups supported the strike, seeing it as a step toward better rules and fair treatment for all voice actors in future projects.
