Currently you can change your name in League of Legends with blue essence in the store. This costs 1300 RP or 13,900 Blue Essence. It's a hefty investment, but for players who've been playing a long time and have blue essence stacked up there's no problem with this method.

You can do this however many times you want with no cooldown in between changes, meaning you can change your name 10 times in a day but it will cost you 139,000 Blue Essence!

This will, however, not be the case for long. This is because Riot Games are changing their system and replacing Summoner Names with Riot IDs. If you play VALORANT or have a VALORANT account you'll be very familiar with Riot IDs and how they work, but we're here to tell you that that is changing too.

So, if you play League of Legends you're used to changing your name in the client with Blue Essence, however, changing your Riot ID requires you to go onto the official Riot Games website accounts page and login there.

You'll then see your game name and your tagline which you can change freely and then press save changes.

Whilst you still can't change your sign in username, you can change your password if you scroll down the page. A lot of people want to change the username that they sign into the client with, however, Riot Games do not have this enabled as a feature, but don't worry no other player will ever see this name!

How often can you change your Riot ID in League of Legends?

So if you're a VALORANT player you know that you can change your Riot ID once every 30 days, this obviously changes your username within VALORANT.

Well, when Riot Games replace Summoner Names in League of Legends with Riot IDs, they will be changing across the board and across every single game title that Riot Games has.

Whilst this Riot ID will be universal across every game of Riot’s that you log in with this account on, you will only be able to change your Riot ID once every 365 days for free.

You will still be able to purchase name changes for roughly $10 of the game currency that you are currently playing on.  this means $10 worth of valorant points $10 worth of RP and League of Legends and $10 worth of any other currency in games such as Legends of Runeterra, League of Legends: Wild Rift, or even Teamfight Tactics.

Write games of announced that this change is coming on November 2023, and whilst this is a big change, Riot Games have stated that this change is to be “as seamless as possible and help you feel as connected to your Riot ID as you do your Summoner Name”.

This is from the official Riot Games announcement page on the change from Summoner Names to Riot IDs, on which you can read the full rundown as to why Riot Games are getting rid of some of their names and replacing them with Riot IDs,  but if you do not feel like reading this article, we have summarized it nice and neatly below.

Why are Riot ID’s replacing Summoner Names in League of Legends?

Riot Games want a more universal experience for players across all of their games, so that they can use the same account and the same names on every single Riot Games title.

The reason Summoner Names are being replaced is because when League of Legends was released it actually had a very different lore.

Champions used to be summoned onto the Rift by Summoners rather than being in their own autonomous universe. Riot Games changed this in 2014 but there are still parts that seep through and filter through into League of Legends, and the biggest one is Summoner names.

The reason why Riot Games decided to make the switch in 2014 was because they realized that with their game ever-growing, the current lore of Summoners and Champions being summoned onto the Rift was very limiting with what was possible with Champions in their back stories.
