They’ll turn the tide faster than you can blink in the right hands. Yes, Fortnite’s augments are genuinely game-changing (literally in some cases!).

After being removed for Fortnite Chapter 4, Season OG, rumor had it that reality augments weren’t returning for Chapter 5… but those rumors were more wrong than pineapple on pizza. If you’re an augment hater, you should turn away now (weirdo).

Otherwise, let’s crack on with everything you need to know about augments!

    What are augments in Fortnite?

In a nutshell, augments are unique enhancements that give you an extra edge against your enemies. They automatically generate every 2.5 minutes per match, meaning the longer you survive, the more of these buffs you can snag.

Once you get an augment, it’s yours for the rest of the match… or until you snuff it.  Survive long enough and you can stack multiple augments – up to four in total.

There’s augments for everything. Some affect combat, while others change the game mechanics. These augments fall into four categories:

    • Combat augments
    • Game Changer augments
    • Mobility & Scouting augments
    • Looting augments

Basically, augments are there to mix up your matches and add a little spice to the game. They were introduced in Fortnite Chapter 4, Season 1, and you’d need to have pudding for brains to ignore them.

    How do you get augments?

    One word – survive.

Seriously, that’s all you’ve gotta do. Just survive and keep an eye out for the clock on the right-hand side of the HUD. Every 2 minutes and 30 seconds, a new augment is up for grabs, an you’ll see a “Ready!” notification on the right to let you know it’s time.

As soon as it’s augment o’clock, just press the activate button when prompted. You’ll be given a choice between two augments. Activate whichever makes you grin wider than the Joker, or reroll your selection.

Careful though, you only get one free augment reroll per match, so use it wisely! Additional rerolls will cost you 100 bars a piece.

Once you’ve activated your chosen augment, it’s yours for the rest of the match. Whenever you get a new one, it won’t overwrite any previous buffs you equipped. And no, you can’t deactivate an augment.

Your choice of augments is always randomized… but we all know that “random” doesn’t always feel random.

Back in Chapter 4, you had to grind a bit and discover new augments, but those days are done. Yes, you don’t have to jump through any hoops to unlock augments anymore. As of Chapter 5, you’ll have full access to every available augment – play at least one match and you’ll be able to view the full list in your menu.

How to use augments like a pro

Since you have a multiple choice when it’s time to get a new augment, you’ve got plenty of customization freedom when it comes to using these buffs in your games.

The only “how to” advice we can really offer is to test out the ones that sound best suited to your play style and mess around with different augment combos until you know which ones will activate your god mode.

When does Fortnite release new augments?

Throughout Chapter 4, Epic Games has released new augments with most of Fortnite’s patches. To keep things fresh, they’ve also disabled a bunch of augments with new patches too.

It’s fair to say that every update to the game is likely to mix things up with new reality augments in one way or other from now on. Will we see more new augments as Chapter 5 marches on? Smart money says yes – just look at augments like Light Fingers, First Assault, or Steady Hands, which have featured time and again with new updates.

    All Fortnite augments list

Can you guess what we’re going to put in here…? Yup, look no further for a handy-dandy list of every augment ever in Fortnite, including when each buff was last seen.

    You’re welcome.

    Chapter 5’s new augments

After Fortnite OG nuked augments altogether, plenty of us have been eagerly awaiting Chapter 5, Season 1, and the return of our favorite perks. Patch v28.10 released on January 23, 2024, and was meant to bring with it the return of reality augments, but we’re still operating in the rumor mill right now…

That said, here are the new augments we’re expecting to find in Chapter 5 (eventually)…

    FAQs

How to activate Augments in Fortnite

In Chapter 4, Augments could be activated during matches once the “Ready!” prompt appeared on your screen. On PC, you would press the 7 key, and on consoles, press or hold right on the D-pad to open the Augment menu. From there, you could choose between two offered perks, reroll once for free, or spend Gold Bars for additional rerolls.

If the default input didn’t work, you could rebind it in the in-game settings under Keyboard Controls or Controller Configurations, assigning it to any key or button you prefer.

How to use Augments in Fortnite

Once selected, Augments applied automatically and remained active for the rest of the match. You could stack multiple Augments by surviving longer and unlocking more selections at intervals.

At each selection stage, you could either pick one of the two Augments offered or reroll for a new set. The first reroll was free, and subsequent rerolls cost Gold Bars.

Are Augments available in Chapter 5?

Augments were removed at the start of Chapter 5 and have not been reintroduced. While some quest descriptions referenced them, they are currently unavailable in the game.
