Clay is an important crafting and building resource in Hytale. While it is classified as a common item, Hytale clay is not always easy to get if you do not know where to look or how the crafting system works.

This Hytale guide explains how to get clay in Hytale, including where to find rare natural clay deposits, how to craft clay from red sandstone cobble, and how to turn clay into coloured variants.

    What is clay in Hytale?

Clay in Hytale is a Common item that can be crafted and, in rare cases, mined directly from the world. Clay is mainly used for building blocks and decorative variants, including:

How to get clay in Hytale: 2 ways you should know

There are two ways to get clay in Hytale: finding natural clay deposits or crafting clay from red sandstone cobble. Both methods have important differences and limitations.

How to find clay in Hytale: Location & what to look for

Natural Hytale clay deposits can spawn underground, but they are rare. Clay deposits appear as compact clusters embedded in cave walls or floors. Because they are uncommon, this method is unreliable if you need large amounts of clay quickly.

Natural clay deposits are useful early on if you happen to discover one, but they should not be your primary clay source in Hytale.

How to craft clay in Hytale (Recommended)

The most reliable way to get Hytale clay is by crafting it from red sandstone cobble, which is abundant in desert regions. When mining in the Howling Sands:

    • Mine red clay blocks only if you want red clay specifically.
    • Mine red sandstone cobble if you want normal clay for crafting and recoloring. Red sandstone cobble can spawn anywhere in desert regions, but your best results will come from mining areas marked as brown zones on the map.

This method allows you to produce clay in Hytale.

How to get coloured clay variants in Hytale

To turn regular Hytale clay into a coloured variant:

    1. Craft or gather normal clay (crafted at a Furniture Workbench from red sandstone).
    2. Open a Furniture Workbench crafting menu.
    3. Combine clay with a dye ingredient — usually petals from flowers or other natural colour sources.
      • For example, adding pink petals will produce pink clay.
      • Adding green petals yields green clay.
      • Charcoal or other materials can produce darker tones.

6 Hytale clay farming tips you should remember

    1. Farm deserts first: Mine red sandstone cobble in the Howling Sands for the most reliable clay source in Hytale.
    2. Use the crafting chain: Smelt cobble into red sandstone, then craft clay at a Furniture Workbench.
    3. Don’t rely on natural clay: Underground clay deposits exist but are rare and inconsistent.
    4. Know the difference: Red clay can’t be recolored; normal clay (crafted) can.
    5. Mark good spots: Save desert and sandstone-rich areas on your map for repeat farming runs.
    6. Bring good tools: A better pickaxe and enough inventory space speed up large clay hauls.

Clay is a core building material in Hytale, used for both practical construction and creative design. Although natural clay deposits do exist, they are rare and not a reliable source. For long-term projects, crafting clay from red sandstone cobble is the most efficient approach, especially if you want access to coloured clay variants.

Whether you are building your first base or working on large creative projects, understanding how to get and use clay in Hytale is essential.
