The best Minecraft shield enchantments and how to get them
Unbreakable shields: enchant, defend, survive longer.Shields are one of the most useful defensive tools in Minecraft. They block melee hits, arrows, and even explosions. But did you know you can make them even stronger with Minecraft shield enchantments? This Minecraft guide explains.
Can you enchant a shield in Minecraft?
Yes, you can enchant a shield, but not with the enchantment table.
To enchant a shield, you must use an anvil and an enchanted book. Place your shield in the first slot, and the enchanted book in the second. Combine them to apply the enchantment.
You can also use commands in Creative Mode, but in Survival, an anvil + enchanted books is the only method.
All shield enchantments in Minecraft
Shields can only have three enchantments in Minecraft:

Best Minecraft shield enchantments
Given the limited official options, the choice is simple but meaningful.
- Mending: The best enchantment for any shield. Mending uses your XP to fix the shield as you play. You’ll almost never have to craft a new one.
- Unbreaking III: A great second choice. Unbreaking makes your shield last much longer before it breaks. It works perfectly with Mending.
- Curse of Vanishing: Not recommended unless you want your shield to vanish when you die. Usually used for fun or in PvP challenges.
Best combo: Mending + Unbreaking III.
How to get Minecraft shield enchantments
Here’s how to get those enchantments on your shield:

- Trade with librarian villagers for Mending or Unbreaking books.
- Find books in dungeons, temples, or stronghold chests.
- Use an enchantment table to get Unbreaking books.
- Use an anvil
- Open the anvil interface.
- Put your shield in one slot and the enchanted book in the other.
- Pay the XP cost and take out your enchanted shield.

Max shield enchantments in Minecraft
- Unbreaking III – highest durability boost
- Mending I – best repair ability
- Curse of Vanishing I – optional, cosmetic effect
A shield with Mending I and Unbreaking III is the strongest setup possible in the game.
Why do shields have limited enchantments?
Shields already block most attacks, so Minecraft limits their enchantments for balance. Adding more would make players nearly invincible. That’s why only durability and repair-based enchantments are allowed.
The Minecraft community has proposed many ideas for more shield-specific enchantments (like knockback on block, “rebound” for projectiles, etc.), but as of now, those remain suggestions and are not part of the official game.
5 tips for enchanting shields
- Always try to get Mending first if you find a book — the long-term value is huge.
- Use Unbreaking III on any shield you’re going to rely on in combat or exploration.
- Avoid Curse of Vanishing unless there’s a reason (e.g. prank, challenge, etc.).
- Always carry backup shields (even unenchanted) in case yours breaks or you lose it in risky endeavors.
- In multiplayer or hardcore mode, having a Mending + Unbreaking shield is a small but meaningful edge.
