Mending is one of the most useful enchantments in Minecraft. It helps players repair their tools, weapons, and armor without needing to craft new ones. Mending has been part of Minecraft since version 1.9 of the Java Edition. It is rare, but its value is high. Here is everything you need to know about what Mending does in Minecraft, how to get it, and all of the other necessary details!

    What is Mending in Minecraft?

Mending is an enchantment that repairs your gear using XP. It works on tools, weapons, armor, and a few other items. When you get experience from mining, fighting mobs, fishing, or any other activity, that XP goes into fixing your item instead of filling your XP bar.

You can’t get Mending from an enchanting table. While getting it from chests in places like dungeons or temples is an option, players can also trade with librarian villagers. You can also get it by fishing, but that’s rare.

Once you find a Mending book, you can apply it to an item using an anvil.

What does Mending do in Minecraft?

Mending repairs the durability of your items by using experience points. When you earn XP and have a Mending item equipped, the game uses that XP to fix the item. For every one XP point, the item regains two durability points.

If more than one item has Mending, the game randomly chooses one of them to repair. Only one item gets fixed per XP orb. The rest of the XP, if any, goes to your XP bar.

Here are some important facts about Mending:

    • It only repairs items that are damaged.
    • It works on tools, armor, weapons, Elytra, shields, and more.
    • It does not work if the item is already at full durability.
    • If several items are damaged, the game picks one randomly.

    You can get XP from:

    • Killing mobs
    • Mining blocks like coal or redstone
    • Smelting items
    • Fishing
    • Trading with villagers

Once the game applies XP to your Mending gear, any leftover XP goes to your level bar as usual.

You can apply Mending to an item using:

    1. An anvil and a Mending book
    2. The /enchant command

You cannot use Mending and Infinity on the same item in Survival mode. These two enchantments do not work together on the same bow.

    Supported Platforms

Mending is available in many versions of Minecraft. Here is a list:

    Can Mending fully repair?

Yes, Mending can fully repair your item. It only works while the item is equipped. As long as the item is not at full durability, the game will use XP to repair it.

Mending stops once the item reaches full durability. The item then waits until it gets damaged again. If you have more than one Mending item equipped, only one gets repaired per XP orb. The rest wait for the next XP orb.

Is Mending worth it in Minecraft?

Yes. Mending is very useful. It helps you keep your best tools and armor for a long time. You don’t need to keep crafting new items or use extra materials to fix your gear.

This is very helpful for tools made with diamonds or Netherite. These are hard to find or expensive to craft. With Mending, you can use XP farms or regular gameplay to keep your items repaired.

Players who use Mending spend less time in crafting tables and more time playing the more 'fun' parts of Minecraft..

    Is Mending better than Unbreaking?

Mending and Unbreaking are both useful, but they work differently.

    • Unbreaking makes your item lose durability less often.
    • Mending repairs your item using XP.

If you want your item to last longer without using XP, Unbreaking is a good choice. If you have a source of XP, like a mob farm, Mending is better because it keeps your item in good condition.

Many players use both. This gives the item extra durability from Unbreaking and lets it repair with Mending. Together, they make a powerful combination.

    Does Mending 1 last forever?

Yes, Mending I can last forever. There is only one level of Mending. The enchantment does not wear out or disappear unless you remove it or the item breaks.

If you keep your item repaired and pay attention to its durability, it will never break. The only way it breaks is if you forget to repair it and let it reach zero durability.

As long as you earn XP and use Mending correctly, your item can last for a very long time.

When I’m not behind the keyboard, I’m watching Galatasaray, following the NBA, or pretending I’m still good at basketball. I also work full-time at AnyDesk, writing serious things in not-so-serious ways.
