In Minecraft, some enchantments help you do more damage or protect your gear. Others give you special effects. Channeling is one of those special ones as it lets you summon lightning with a trident. You can’t get this effect in any other way, and we need to say this in advance; it is one of the most fun but hard-to-use enchantments in the game. Here is everything you need to know about the Channeling enchantment in Minecraft!

    What is Channeling?

Channeling is an enchantment that you can only use on a trident. It lets you strike mobs with lightning when you hit them with the trident during a thunderstorm. But for it to work, the mob must stand under the open sky. If there is a block above the mob, lightning won’t strike them.

You can’t use Channeling with the Riptide enchantment. If you try to combine them with commands, Riptide cancels out Channeling. Additionally, Channeling has only one level, which is Channeling I.

What does Channeling do in Minecraft?

Channeling adds a lightning effect to your trident. When you throw your trident at a mob during a thunderstorm, lightning hits the mob if it is outside. This lightning causes different changes depending on the mob:

    • Creepers turn into Charged Creepers.
    • Villagers turn into Witches.
    • Pigs turn into Zombified Piglins.
    • Red Mooshrooms turn into Brown ones, and the other way around.

    Description

Summons lightning at mobs when hit with a trident in storm

    Riptide

You can also hit lightning rods with a Channeling trident. This creates lightning even if no mobs are nearby. But this works only during thunderstorms. Lightning from Channeling does not affect skeleton trap horses and cannot be redirected into lightning rods.

In Java Edition, Channeling won’t work if the mob is:

    • In water or lava
    • On certain blocks (like soul sand or honey blocks)
    • Inside a minecart or boat
    • In snow (if snow layer is 8)
    • Covered by any block

But if lightning hits nearby, it can still affect the mob. For example, if lightning hits an armor stand next to a mob in water, the mob still changes form.

How to use Channeling in Minecraft

First, you need to get a trident and add the Channeling enchantment. You can do this with an enchanting table, an anvil, or a command.

After that, wait for a thunderstorm or set the weather to thunder using commands. Find a mob outside with no blocks above it. Then throw your enchanted trident at the mob. If everything is correct, lightning will strike the mob when the trident hits.

Make sure it is a thunderstorm, not just rain. Also make sure the mob is standing in an open area. Channeling won’t work if the mob is under trees, inside a cave, or inside a building.

Unfortunately, Channeling doesn’t work unless there is a thunderstorm and the mob is outside (Image Credit: r/Minecraft)

What is Channeling good for in Minecraft?

Channeling is useful for several things:

    • Creating Charged Creepers: These creepers have stronger explosions and drop mob heads when they kill other mobs.
    • Unlocking Advancements: You can complete goals like “Very Very Frightening” by turning a villager into a witch.
    • Mob Farming: Some farms use lightning to change mob types.
    • Creative Builds: You can use Channeling with lightning rods to make dramatic effects.

Does Channeling work in rain or only thunderstorms?

Channeling works only during thunderstorms. It does not work in regular rain. The sky must be dark, and you must hear thunder. You also need to make sure the mob is under the open sky. If any blocks are above the mob, Channeling won’t activate.

In Bedrock Edition, you can hit lightning rods during any rain, but you still need a thunderstorm to affect mobs.

    Is Channeling 1 rare?

No, Channeling is not very rare. You can find it in several ways:

    • From enchantment tables
    • From librarian villagers
    • By fishing for enchanted books
    • Inside chests in dungeons or mineshafts
    • From raid drops (Bedrock Edition)

You may not get it right away, but it doesn’t take too long to find it. It is easier to get than other rare enchantments like Mending.

    Does Channeling 2 exist?

No. Channeling only has one level which is Channeling I. You cannot upgrade it to Channeling II or higher. The lightning effect stays the same no matter how many times you enchant the trident.

    Is Channeling or Riptide better?

Channeling and Riptide are both enchantments for tridents, but they do different things. You can’t use both on the same trident. If you try to combine them, Riptide wins and Channeling won’t work.

    • Channeling: Summons lightning. Best for mob changes, farming, and fun effects. Works only during thunderstorms.
    • Riptide: Launches you through air or water when you throw the trident. Best for fast travel and moving through water. Works only when wet.

If you want to summon lightning and change mobs, choose Channeling. If you want to fly through storms and oceans, choose Riptide. Each enchantment is better in a different situation.

Channeling is a useful enchantment, but the only issue is that you can’t use it unless there is a thunderstorm. It works only during thunderstorms and only when mobs are outside. It’s easy to get and fun to use. If you play Minecraft and want something different, Channeling is a great enchantment to try.

I started writing here in 2021, but my first gig was back in 2018. That was when I realized people actually get paid to write about games. I’ve written thousands of articles for different media outlets, led teams, and conducted interviews with players.

When I’m not behind the keyboard, I’m watching Galatasaray, following the NBA, or pretending I’m still good at basketball. I also work full-time at AnyDesk, writing serious things in not-so-serious ways.
