Roblox players are boycotting The Hatch event, a highly anticipated game-wide Easter egg hunt, due to serious concerns over child safety and platform moderation. While The Hatch was meant to be a fun, community-driven event, it quickly turned controversial, sparking widespread backlash and a player-led boycott.

    Roblox The Hatch event explained

The Hatch was an Easter egg hunt event in Roblox. During the event, players search for special Easter eggs hidden inside many different games on Roblox. There are hundreds of eggs to find, and players can collect them, trade with friends, and even combine eggs to make new, rarer ones.

The event officially ended on July 12, 2025.

Here are all the details you need to know about the Roblox The Hatch event.

The main reason Roblox players boycotted The Hatch event

At the heart of the boycott is Roblox’s decision to include a developer known as TheOfficialTeddy, who had previously been banned for creating content inappropriate for minors. Roblox players and parents raised alarms when this developer was allowed back to participate in the event, sparking fears over the platform’s commitment to child safety. This decision has become the main reason why Roblox players are boycotting The Hatch event.

    Developer controversy and Roblox’s response

Roblox players are boycotting The Hatch event because they feel the platform did not properly enforce its Community Standards. After the backlash, Roblox conducted an internal investigation and permanently removed TheOfficialTeddy from the platform. Roblox stated that the developer violated policies in ways that could not be fixed, leading to their ban and removal of their games from the event.

“In the case of TheOfficialTeddy, we investigated in accordance with this criteria. We asked the creator to make changes to the experience to comply with our Standards regarding user abuse within experiences, and they were able to comply within our timeline. However, in the course of our investigation, we also confirmed a separate outstanding policy violation that cannot be rectified. As a result, the user behind TheOfficialTeddy and the groups they own are no longer permitted on Roblox, and we are removing the ability to play their games until we know there is an owner who can run the games in compliance with our Community Standards.”

Other factors behind the Hatch boycott

Besides the controversial developer, Roblox players are boycotting The Hatch event due to:

    • Inappropriate content: Some games featured in the event reportedly contained mature themes unsuitable for Roblox’s mainly young audience.
    • Lack of clear moderation: Players criticized Roblox for inconsistent enforcement of rules, especially around user-generated content.
    • Event structure issues: The sheer number of games involved (over 1,000) and bugs made the event feel overwhelming and less enjoyable.
    • Community trust erosion: Past controversies and recent decisions have led many players to question Roblox’s priorities, accusing the platform of favoring profits over player safety.
    • AI usage: Many fans and developers also say that some of the event’s artwork and promotional images were created using AI tools, possibly connected to Roblox’s own AI projects like Cube 3D.

    Fallout from the Hatch boycott

The hashtag #BoycottTheHatch has trended across social media, with many players demanding more transparency and stricter content controls. This unrest has also affected Roblox’s reputation, contributing to:

    • Drops in Roblox’s stock prices after weaker-than-expected user growth.
    • Increased parental concern about safety on the platform.
    • Calls for better content moderation and clearer communication from Roblox.

    Is Roblox safe for kids?

Roblox has long marketed itself as a platform for all ages, especially children. However, events like The Hatch raise questions about its ability to monitor user-generated content at scale.

In response to the outcry, CEO David Baszucki defended the platform, emphasizing:

    • Parental controls that allow adults to restrict chat, game access, and screen time
    • Ongoing investment in moderation systems powered by both human and AI review
    • The option for parents to keep their kids off the platform if they feel unsafe

Despite these assurances, critics argue that moderation often fails to prevent inappropriate experiences from slipping through.
