How to make a black car in Rocket League
Many of us dream of having a black car in real life, and that goes for Rocket League too. Black is very simple, but it makes the car look royal and cool. That is why many players want to own a black car in Rocket League, but can they actually have one? While there isn’t a default black color selection in Rocket League, there are some ways to make a black car. Here is everything you need to know!
Why isn’t there a black car option in Rocket League?
Rocket League limits primary paint colors because each car still needs to be clearly on the Blue and Orange teams. The game uses team colors as part of match visibility, so true black and true white do not work like normal primary colors in the regular Garage system.
You can still use black in other parts of a design. Some decals allow dark sections, some items come in black-painted versions, and many wheels, boosts, trails, and goal explosions use black or dark gray styles. The limit mainly applies to the primary paint color.
This is why two players can have very different results. One player may only use the default color picker, while another player may own a black-painted body or a decal that covers most of the car.
How to make a black car
The fastest way to make a black car in Rocket League is to start with the darkest cosmetics you own. You cannot force the game to give you a fully black primary color, so the decal and painted body matter most.
Follow these steps:
- Open the Garage from the main menu.
- Choose Customize Car.
- Pick the car body you want to use.
- Equip a Black Painted body if you own one.
- Go to Decal and choose a dark decal or a black-painted decal.
- Set your primary color to the darkest legal shade for each team.
- Set your accent color to black, dark gray, or another dark tone when the decal allows it.
- Choose a dark paint finish, such as matte, anodized, or metallic-style finishes.
- Add black wheels, a dark boost, and a dark trail to complete the design.
Your black car may not work if the decal has strict color limits. Some decals only use certain color zones, and some bodies do not support every decal.
You may also miss key items if you do not own a Black Painted body, black decal, or dark universal decal.
Check your archived items if something seems missing. Players often archive old wheels, decals, or painted bodies and then forget they own them.

Best items for a black Rocket League car
A strong black Rocket League car usually needs more than one item. The body color, decal coverage, and finish all change the final look.
These item types give the best results:
- Black Painted car bodies: These create the strongest base for the design.
- Dark universal decals: These work across many cars and cover more space.
- Black Painted decals: These can turn a normal design into a darker preset.
- Dark paint finishes: Matte and metallic finishes can reduce bright shine.
- Black wheels: They make the car feel more complete from every angle.
- Dark boosts and trails: These keep the style consistent during play.
The Item Shop, Rocket Pass, drops, bundles, and trade-ins can all add useful cosmetics to your account. Availability changes over time, so check the Garage and shop often if you want a specific black item.
Is there a black market car in Rocket League?
There is no normal “Black Market car” category in Rocket League. Black Market is an item rarity, not a promise that the item is black. Players usually see this rarity on high-tier decals, goal explosions, and other cosmetics.
A Black Market decal can still help you make a darker car if the design allows strong dark coverage. However, a Black Market item and a Black Painted car body are not the same thing.
The safest way to build a black Rocket League car is to use items from inside the game. Start with your Garage, then check the Item Shop, Rocket Pass rewards, drops, and eligible trade-ins.
Avoid old advice that tells you to trade with other players. Player-to-player trading was removed, so third-party trading offers can put your account or money at risk.
