Fortnite stands as a cornerstone of the Battle Royale genre, earning reputation not only for its crucial role in elevating this category to immense popularity but also for its remarkable ability to sustain a devoted player community despite its initial release over six years ago in September 2017. Its success is largely in part due to its free-to-play model, with optional in-game purchases. The lack of a mandatory price point and cross-platform accesebility from the get-go helped the game reach a wider audience and boost its popularity further.

Fortnite on PlayStation

As mentioned, Fortnite has maintained a cross-platform approach from its launch, debuting simultaneously on the PlayStation 4 and other platforms. Released in 2017, it preceded the arrival of the PlayStation 5. However, Epic Games promptly expanded Fortnite's reach to the new hardware, crafting a next-gen version of the game that harnesses the enhanced graphics and haptic capabilities of the PS5 and the new DualSense controller.

Do you need PS Plus to play Fortnite?

Despite being a free-to-play title, there's a common misconception among players that an active PS Plus subscription is required for enjoying Fortnite on PlayStation. PS Plus serves as PlayStation's subscription service, offering a range of benefits. However, it's worth noting that the most pivotal aspect of a PS Plus subscription, particularly in the context of enjoying Fortnite, is its role as a gateway that controls access to online features, a necessity for most multiplayer games.

Fortunately for players that want to enjoy Fortnite, an exception to the PS Plus rule exists for games that are inherently free-to-play and accessible on various platforms. Games, such as Fortnite, therefore do not require a PS Plus membership. However, having an active PS Plus subscription doesn't hinder your access to the game either; in fact, there are often promotions that provide free in-game cosmetics, including rare skins, gliders, and backblings, to PS Plus members.
