Paintings are always great decoratives to hang on walls and you can also use them in Minecraft to make your building look way better. Many of the Minecraft house ideas come with painting recommendations within the rooms and you can pick whatever you like from a wide variety of 46 different paintings in the game. Here is how to get them in the game!

What is a painting in Minecraft?

A painting in Minecraft is a wall decoration. It shows a random picture when it is placed. The picture does not depend on the wool color used in crafting. The game picks a picture based on the free space available on the wall. When a painting is broken, it drops as an item. The game also lets players break paintings with projectiles like arrows or snowballs. A painting may also drop from an explosion.

Paintings can be placed on many solid surfaces. They work on blocks, signs, banners, or sculk veins. A small gap always appears between the painting and the wall. This gap creates a unique look. Some players use paintings to hide secret doorways. The painting can also hide a player’s name if they stand behind it. Master-level shepherd villagers sell paintings as well.

How to craft a painting in Minecraft

Begin by opening your crafting table to see the 3x3 grid.

    Materials Needed

    • 8 sticks
    • 1 wool block

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Open the crafting menu.
    2. Place three sticks in the top row.
    3. Place one stick in the first box of the middle row, one wool block in the second box, and one stick in the third box.
    4. Place three sticks in the bottom row.
    5. The pattern must match the recipe exactly.
    6. The painting appears in the result box.
    7. Move the painting to your inventory.

How to obtain paintings in Minecraft

Players have two main methods to get paintings.

    Breaking a Painting

Attack a painting or remove its support.

    1. Throw a projectile such as an arrow, egg, or snowball.
    2. An explosion will also break a painting.
    3. When broken, the painting drops as an item.

    Trading

    1. Master-level shepherd villagers offer paintings.
    2. They usually trade three paintings for two emeralds.

How to place a painting in Minecraft

Paintings must go on the side of a block. They cannot stand on the ground. To place a painting, first you need to find a wall with enough space. If there are any blocks blocking the placement area, simply remove them. After removing the block, follow these steps:

    1. Right-click the wall with the painting in hand.
    2. The game shows the largest painting that fits.
    3. To get a smaller painting, use temporary blocks to restrict the area.

How to get the element paintings in Minecraft

Element paintings include themes such as Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. There are two ways of getting them. Here are those ways:

    • Standard paintings can be traded with shepherd villagers.
    • Element paintings require a data pack or the use of the /summon command.

What is the rarest Minecraft painting?

In Minecraft, all paintings appear randomly when you place one. But some feel rarer because they need more space on a wall. The painting called "Kong" is one of the rarest. It takes up a 4x4 block area, so it only shows up if you have a large, empty wall. Another large one, "Skull on Fire", also needs a lot of room. These paintings don’t appear often during normal building because players usually place them on small walls.

Even though all 46 painting designs have the same chance to show, the bigger ones are harder to get. The game doesn’t treat any painting as rare, but the space you use makes a big difference. If you want a specific one, you must control the wall size.

    Do paintings break in Minecraft?

Yes, paintings can break in Minecraft. If the block behind a painting gets removed, the painting will fall off. You can also break it by clicking on it. It drops as an item, and you can place it again. Explosions or water can also make it fall. The painting you get when you place it again will probably be different. To get the same one, you must match the wall size exactly.
