Everything about the Breach enchantment in Minecraft
This enchantment definitely comes in handy when going into combat.Minecraft enchantments usually buff player tools or weapons, but some nerf opponent gear to have the upper hand. Breach helps players fight opponents who have strong armor by reducing the effectiveness of that armor during combat. Unlike most enchantments that directly boost weapon damage, Breach indirectly increases damage by weakening enemy armor. Here is everything you need to know about the Breach enchantment in Minecraft!
What does the breach enchantment do in Minecraft?
Breach reduces the armor effectiveness of any enemy you hit. Each level of Breach reduces armor by 15%. At its highest level (level 4), Breach cuts armor effectiveness by a total of 60%. It affects both wearable armor and the natural defense of certain creatures.
Players can acquire Breach enchantments through:
- Using an enchantment table on a mace or book
- Trading with librarian villagers
- Fishing (though this method is rare)
- Finding enchanted books in places like ominous vaults
Which weapons or items can you use for the Breach enchantment?
Breach can only be applied to the mace in Minecraft. It cannot be used on other weapons like swords, axes, or bows.
Breach usage and stats
The Breach enchantment helps reduce the protective ability of enemy armor, with each enchantment level reducing armor effectiveness by 15%. At Breach I, armor that normally blocks half of the damage would only block 35% after being hit by a mace. Breach becomes significantly stronger as it levels up, with Breach IV reducing enemy armor by a total of 60%.
Breach does not affect the Protection enchantment or the Resistance effect. It only reduces the base armor points. This makes Breach powerful against heavily armored players, leveling the playing field between different types of armor.
When using Breach IV with a Strength II potion, it usually takes around four critical hits to defeat a player wearing either strong armor (like Protection IV netherite) or weaker armor (like Protection IV leather). Without Strength II, defeating a player with leather armor usually takes seven critical hits, while defeating one wearing netherite armor takes eight.
In Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Breach IV maces are especially powerful. When attacking armored opponents, they deal more damage per second than Sharpness V netherite swords. This is because the Bedrock Edition allows rapid attacks without cooldown delays.

Breach enchantment incompatibilities
Breach cannot normally be combined with some other enchantments. These enchantments include:
- Smite: Increases damage specifically against undead mobs. Cannot be used with Breach.
- Bane of Arthropods: Deals extra damage to spiders and similar mobs. It is not compatible with Breach.
- Density: Enhances attack power for heavy hits, but you cannot combine it with Breach.
Players must choose carefully, as these enchantments cannot coexist without using commands to override the restriction.
