Enchantments in Minecraft are usually very beneficial as they strengthen your weapon, armor, or character in general. Impaling is one of the best enchantments for underwater fights and you can only use it on a trident. It lets you deal more damage to certain mobs and is considered one of the most popular enchantments in the game. In this piece, we go over what Impaling is in Minecraft, its stats, and all of the other important information you need to know about it!

    What is Impaling?

Impaling is an enchantment that you can apply only to a trident. It increases the damage your trident deals to certain mobs. It is useful when fighting in water or during rain.

The enchantment has five levels. The higher the level, the more damage you deal. Impaling works well in ocean biomes, rivers, or against mobs that live underwater. It is helpful in survival mode, especially when exploring deep areas.

What does Impaling do in Minecraft?

Impaling increases the attack power of a trident. It does more damage when used under certain conditions. The effects of Impaling depend on which Minecraft version you are playing.

In Java Edition, Impaling only works on aquatic mobs. These include:

    • Axolotls
    • Dolphins
    • Guardians
    • Elder Guardians
    • Squid
    • Glow Squids
    • Turtles
    • All fish types

It does not affect drowned mobs because they count as undead, not aquatic.

In Bedrock Edition, Impaling works on all mobs and players that are in contact with water. It includes mobs underwater, standing in water, or getting hit during rain. This version of the enchantment is more flexible than in Java.

Each Impaling level adds 2.5 points of extra damage. That means Impaling V gives you 12.5 extra damage. This can help you kill mobs faster and stay safe during fights.

How to use Impaling in Minecraft

You can add Impaling to a trident in three ways. You can use an enchanting table, an anvil, or a command.

    1. Using an Enchanting Table

To enchant your trident with an enchanting table:

    • Build 15 bookshelves around the enchanting table.
    • Open the enchanting table.
    • Put your trident in the left box.
    • Add 3 lapis lazuli in the right box.
    • Choose one of the available enchantments.
    • Use your experience points to apply it.

The enchantments depend on your experience level. Higher levels give better enchantments. You can earn more experience by killing mobs or using commands.

    2. Using an Anvil and Enchanted Book

If you have an enchanted book with Impaling:

    • Place an anvil.
    • Open the anvil menu.
    • Put your trident in the first slot.
    • Put the enchanted book in the second slot.
    • Use your experience points to combine them.
    • Move the enchanted trident into your inventory.

    3. Using the Enchant Command

In Java Edition, you can also use a command:

    • Type /enchant <player> impaling <level>
    • Example: /enchant Steve impaling 5

This command instantly adds Impaling to your trident if you are holding it.

What does Impaling 5 do in Minecraft?

Impaling V is the highest level of the enchantment. It adds 12.5 extra damage per hit. This makes it very powerful, especially in water-based fights.

In Java Edition, Impaling V affects only aquatic mobs. In Bedrock Edition, it affects all mobs and players in water or rain. It is very useful for fighting guardians, elder guardians, and other sea mobs. It also helps in rainy conditions in Bedrock.

    How rare is Impaling 5?

Impaling V is rare but not impossible to get. You need a full enchantment setup with 15 bookshelves and 30 experience levels. Even then, it may not appear every time.

You can also get it by:

    • Finding enchanted books in loot chests
    • Fishing with the “Luck of the Sea” enchantment
    • Trading with librarian villagers
    • Combining lower-level Impaling books using an anvil

Using a grindstone to reset enchantments and trying again is another option

Does Impaling work in the rain?

In Bedrock Edition, yes. Impaling works on any mob that is standing in the rain. It also works on players during storms. This makes Impaling more useful in outdoor fights.

In Java Edition, rain has no effect. The enchantment only boosts damage against aquatic mobs, even during rainfall.

Impaling is a powerful enchantment that makes tridents stronger in specific conditions. Depending on your version, it helps you deal more damage in water or when it rains. Impaling V gives the biggest boost and works best when exploring oceans or fighting underwater mobs.

Use this enchantment to have the upper hand in combats and stay safe when you are underwater. We have got more Minecraft guides for you to check out on our website. Start by checking out these ones:

When I’m not behind the keyboard, I’m watching Galatasaray, following the NBA, or pretending I’m still good at basketball. I also work full-time at AnyDesk, writing serious things in not-so-serious ways.
