Some Minecraft items are obtained in different ways, and it can be confusing, especially for beginners. Smooth Stone is one of these items that many players want to have in the game, but don’t know how to obtain. We explain everything you need to know about it in this guide. Here is how to make smooth stone in Minecraft!

What is a smooth stone in Minecraft?

Smooth stone in Minecraft is a building block made by smelting regular stone. You cannot craft smooth stone with a crafting table. You must first smelt cobblestone into stone, then smelt the stone again to get smooth stone. Smooth stone can be used in various Minecraft house ideas.

Smooth stone is popular because of its clean and polished look. Players often use it to build modern-style houses, roads, and decorative features. Smooth stone also appears naturally in some structures in the game, like villages and trail ruins.

How to make smooth stone in Minecraft

Many players think they can craft smooth stone in Minecraft, but that is not true. There are four different ways to make smooth stone, and crafting is not one of them. You could either smelt, break the item, find it in chests, or get it from villages. Here is a closer look at all the ways:

    Step 1: Get Cobblestone

You must first mine cobblestone using a pickaxe. Cobblestone is common and found in caves, mountains, ocean ruins, strongholds, and dungeons. Here is a list of all items you need to smelt smooth stone in Minecraft:

    • Cobblestone
    • Fuel (coal, wood, etc.)
    • Furnace

    Step 2: Make a Furnace

    • Open your crafting table.
    • Put eight cobblestones around the edges, leaving the center empty.
    • Drag the furnace into your inventory after crafting.

Step 3: Smelt Cobblestone into Stone

    • Place your furnace on the ground and open it by right-clicking.
    • Put fuel (coal or wood) into the bottom slot.
    • Put cobblestone into the top slot.
    • The furnace will then smelt cobblestone into stone.

Step 4: Smelt Stone into Smooth Stone

    • After you get stone, put it back into the top slot.
    • Keep fuel in the furnace.
    • The furnace will smelt the stone into smooth stone.

    Breaking Smooth Stone

Smooth stone needs a pickaxe for mining. If you mine it without a pickaxe, it will drop nothing.

    Finding Smooth Stone in Chests

Players can sometimes find smooth stone in village chests. It has about a 20.8% chance of appearing in mason’s chests in both Java and Bedrock editions.

    Finding Smooth Stone in Villages

Smooth stone appears naturally in villages, just like other items. You can find it especially in butcher houses in plains, savanna, and snowy plains villages. According to Minecraft Wiki, it can also appear in trail ruins. If you don’t have a furnace and near a village or trail ruins, you can just take a quick look around to see if there is any smooth stone around or not. Grab them before villagers do!

Why can't I craft smooth stone?

Smooth Stone is not like other blocks when it comes to crafting. Most players assume they can craft the item in the game. However, you cannot craft smooth stone directly on a crafting table. Minecraft developers designed smooth stone to be made only in a furnace. To make smooth stone, you first smelt cobblestone into stone, then smelt stone into smooth stone.

Can you turn smooth stone back into stone?

No, smooth stone cannot be changed back into regular stone. Once you smelt stone into smooth stone, it stays smooth stone forever. Players should plan carefully and only smelt as much smooth stone as they need. Any extra smooth stone should be stored or used differently because it cannot be reversed.

    Can silverfish break smooth stone?

Silverfish can infest regular stone, cobblestone, and stone bricks. However, they cannot infest or break smooth stone. Silverfish also cannot infest polished blocks such as andesite, diorite, or granite. Using smooth stone in your builds protects against damage from silverfish.

Smooth stone has been in Minecraft for a long time. It is popular because it is simple but useful. Players cannot craft smooth stone directly using the crafting table. Because smooth stone looks nice, players often use it in buildings, paths, and decorative features. It is useful to learn how to make smooth stone if you want to build beautiful structures in the game.

When I’m not behind the keyboard, I’m watching Galatasaray, following the NBA, or pretending I’m still good at basketball. I also work full-time at AnyDesk, writing serious things in not-so-serious ways.
