If you have ever tried breeding cows, sheep, or pigs in Minecraft, frogs may catch you off guard. You feed two adults, see the hearts appear, and then... no baby frog. That is completely normal. Can you breed frogs in Minecraft?

Yes, you can breed frogs in Minecraft. You only need two adult frogs and one slimeball for each of them.

Once the breeding finishes, one frog becomes pregnant. It will then move around until it finds a suitable water surface where it can lay frogspawn.

You can usually find frogs naturally in swamp and mangrove swamp biomes. Getting two of them into the same place can take a little effort, but slimeballs make that easier. Hold one in your hand and nearby frogs will follow you.

Just make sure both frogs are adults. Tadpoles cannot breed, even if you have slimeballs ready.

How to breed frogs

Once you have two adult frogs together, the actual breeding part only takes a few seconds. Most of the process comes after that.

1. Bring two adult frogs close together. Hold a slimeball if you need to lure them into the same area.
2. Make sure there is water nearby. One frog will need an open water surface after breeding.
3. Feed each frog one slimeball. Hearts should appear above both frogs.
4. Wait for the breeding animation to finish. One of the frogs will become pregnant.
5. Give the frog access to water. It will search for a valid spot and place frogspawn on top.
6. Leave the frogspawn where it is. It needs time to hatch.

This is the part that often confuses players. You will not see a tiny frog appear next to the adults. Minecraft uses a full life cycle here, so the frogspawn has to hatch first.

A simple breeding pen can make the process much easier. Give the frogs enough room to move and keep a patch of water inside the enclosure. That way, the pregnant frog does not need to wander far before it can lay frogspawn.

What do frogs eat in Minecraft?

Slimeballs are the item you will use most often with frogs. They are what you feed adult frogs when you want them to breed, and holding one also makes nearby frogs follow you.

Frogs interact with a few other mobs too. They can eat the smallest version of a slime, which drops a slimeball. They can also eat small magma cubes, and that interaction creates a froglight.

For breeding, though, slimeballs are the only thing you need to worry about. Keep at least two with you for one breeding attempt. If you plan to breed several frogs or speed up tadpole growth later, bring a few extras.

How to get all three frog variants after breeding

This is where frog breeding gets more interesting. A tadpole does not automatically grow into the same type of frog as its parents.

Instead, Minecraft checks the temperature of the biome where the tadpole becomes an adult.

That means you can breed your frogs in one place, collect the tadpoles in buckets, and then take them to different biomes before they grow up.

• The frogs recently bred: They need some time before they can breed again.
• The exact cooldown differs between Java and Bedrock Edition.
• The pregnant frog cannot reach suitable water: Give it access to an open water surface nearby.
