Tropical fish are highly sought-after animals in Minecraft, and many players want to know if they can breed them once they catch some to put in their aquariums or fish ponds. However, we have bad news for you. You cannot breed tropical fish in Minecraft Survival mode. The game does not let players feed two tropical fish and create a baby fish. Does that mean they are useless? Absolutely not! Here is everything you need to know about tropical fish!

    What is a tropical fish?

A tropical fish is a small passive aquatic mob in Minecraft. It lives underwater and comes in many colors, shapes, and patterns. They are usually used for decorative ponds and aquariums, as they are also not hostile.

Tropical fish usually appear in warm ocean areas, lukewarm oceans, deep lukewarm oceans, lush caves, and some mangrove swamp conditions depending on the edition. If you want the easiest route, look for warm ocean water near coral reefs. These areas often have groups of colorful fish, so you can fill several buckets in one trip.

A killed tropical fish drops a tropical fish item, but this is not the same as a live fish in a bucket. That difference matters because axolotls need a bucket of tropical fish for breeding. A raw tropical fish item will not work for that purpose.

    How to breed tropical fish

You cannot breed tropical fish in Minecraft. There is no tropical fish breeding mechanic, no love mode, and no food item that makes two tropical fish produce another fish.

If you need more tropical fish, you must get them through one of these methods:

How to catch tropical fish in Minecraft

Catching tropical fish is the best Survival method if you want more of them. You need buckets, water, and a valid place where tropical fish can spawn.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Craft buckets with iron ingots.
    2. Fill the buckets with water.
    3. Travel to a warm ocean, lukewarm ocean, lush cave, or another valid tropical fish area.
    4. Swim close to a tropical fish.
    5. Use the water bucket on the fish.
    6. Carry the bucketed fish back to your base.
    7. Place it into an aquarium, pond, or axolotl setup.

Where to find tropical fish in Minecraft

The best place to find tropical fish in Minecraft is a warm ocean, especially around coral reefs. These areas usually give you the fastest results because the fish appear in groups and stand out against the coral.

Lush caves are also useful, especially if your base sits far from the ocean. They can spawn tropical fish in underground water, so they work well for players who build below the surface or explore cave systems often.

How to use tropical fish to breed axolotls

Tropical fish matter most when you work with axolotls. To breed axolotls in Minecraft, you need buckets of tropical fish. The loose tropical fish item does not work.

    Here is the basic process:

    1. Place two adult axolotls near each other.
    2. Hold a Bucket of Tropical Fish.
    3. Use one bucket on the first axolotl.
    4. Use another bucket on the second axolotl.
    5. Wait for the baby axolotl to appear.

The fish gets consumed during the process, and you keep the water bucket. That means you need fresh tropical fish for each breeding attempt.

Can you make a tropical fish farm?

You cannot make a true tropical fish breeding farm, but you can make a collection area. This works best near a biome where tropical fish naturally spawn.

The idea is simple. Build close to a warm ocean, coral reef, or lush cave water source. Keep buckets nearby, then collect fish when they appear. This does not create new fish through breeding, but it gives you a practical supply route.
