Many Fortnite players in the United States are now getting refunds because of a legal case involving Epic Games and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The refunds come from a $245 million settlement. Epic Games agreed to pay this amount, and you may be eligible to get your money back. If you are wondering how, keep reading!

Is the Fortnite FTC refund real?

Yes, the refund is real and part of an official FTC process. It follows a $245 million settlement that Epic Games agreed to in 2022. The FTC accused Epic of using misleading in-game systems to charge players without proper consent. Epic recently added Fortnite Wallet cards as an extra payment option in the game.

The FTC has already sent out over 1.5 million payments through checks and PayPal. These payments went to people who filed a valid claim. The first wave happened in December 2024. The second took place in June 2025.

Players who still want to file a claim have until July 9, 2025. This refund is available only to U.S. consumers. The FTC does not ask for money or private login information. Anyone promising you faster payment for a fee is not connected to the official refund process.

What is the story behind Fortnite’s FTC refund?

Between 2017 and 2022, Epic Games allowed players to make in-game purchases without clear steps or confirmation. Children often made purchases on their parents' accounts without permission. In some cases, players got charged while navigating menus or during loading screens.

When some users tried to cancel payments, Epic reportedly blocked access to their accounts. The FTC reviewed these actions and said Epic used designs that caused confusion and led to unapproved purchases. These designs are known as “dark patterns,” which are created to push users into buying things without full awareness.

Epic did not fight the charges and agreed to the $245 million settlement. The refund program is now helping affected players recover their lost money. It also sends a message to other companies about fair design practices in games.

How do I check my FTC refund?

If you already filed a claim and it was approved, your refund should have been sent in June 2025. You would have received it through PayPal or as a check, depending on your choice.

You should cash the check within 90 days or accept the PayPal payment within 30 days. If you are not sure whether your refund was sent, you can call the refund team at 1-833-915-0880. You can also email them at “[email protected].”

To stay updated, go to www.ftc.gov/fortnite. You will find refund data, FAQs, and official announcements. This is the safest place to check your refund status.

How do I get my FTC Fortnite refund?

To apply for the refund, go to the FTC’s official website for Fortnite. You will need either a claim number or your Epic Account ID. If you did not receive a claim number by email, the website shows you how to find your Epic ID.

You may qualify for a refund if:

    • You got charged for in-game items you did not want between January 2017 and September 2022.
    • Your child used your payment method to make unauthorized purchases between January 2017 and November 2018.
    • Epic locked your account after you disputed a charge with your bank or credit card company during the same period.

You must be at least 18 years old to submit the form. If you are younger, a parent or guardian must complete the form for you. The final deadline to apply is July 9, 2025. No one needs to pay anything to file a claim.

When should I expect my refund?

If your claim was approved by February 14, 2025, your refund should have arrived in late June 2025. This was the second round of payments. If you filed your claim after February 14, your refund is still being reviewed.

The FTC states that additional payments will be sent in 2026. The amount you receive depends on the number of people who apply and the amount they are owed. The average refund in the second round was about $130. Make sure your payment method is correct when you apply.

How to find more information and who to contact

If you have questions, you can contact the official refund team. Call 1-833-915-0880 or email [email protected]. You can also visit www.ftc.gov/fortnite or www.fortniterefund.com for full details.

The FTC also has a refund dashboard that shows how much money has been refunded by state. This tool is available on their website. If you see a message or email asking for money to get a refund, ignore it. That is a scam. The FTC does not charge any fee for this process.
