Zaahen abilities, build, runes & guides in LOL
Zaahen enters League of Legends as a front-line Darkin who controls fights with damage, healing, and setup tools. He fits players who like aggressive trades, smart timing, and steady pressure in lane. Here you find all Zaahen skills, the best runes and items, and his hardest counters!
All Zaahen skills
Zaahen has a strong set of skills with a passive that completes the champion to be a strong fighter in the top side of the map. Here are all of his skills and passive:
Passive - Cultivation of War

Official Description: Zaahen’s attacks and abilities against enemy champions grant him stacks of Determination, gaining bonus Attack Damage per stack. When filled with Determination, Zaahen gains increased Attack Damage and can revive.
Zaahen’s passive, Cultivation of War, powers up every part of his kit. Each time he hits enemy champions with attacks or abilities, he gains stacks of Determination that grant bonus Attack Damage. You want to trade often to stack this passive before you commit to an all-in.
Q - The Darkin Glaive

Official Description: Zaahen slashes twice on his next attack, dealing bonus damage and healing himself. Zaahen can recast this ability to have his next attack deal bonus damage and knock up his target.
His Q, The Darkin Glaive, empowers his next attack to strike twice and heal him. After the first cast, Zaahen can recast Q to make his next attack add more damage and knock the target up. In lane, you use Q to win early trades, last-hit safely, and heal through poke. With stacked passive and Q ready at level 1, Zaahen can trade very aggressively and often win the first fight.
W - Dreaded Return

Official Description: Zaahen stabs in a direction, damaging enemies hit and pulling them towards him.
His W, Dreaded Return, sends his glaive in a line and damages enemies on the way out and back. It pulls targets toward Zaahen, so you use it to drag opponents into your melee range or back into your minion wave. W sets up Q recast knock-ups and gives you reliable crowd control during chases or tower dives.
E - Aureate Rush

Official Description: Zaahen dashes to a location and slices around himself.
His E, Aureate Rush, lets Zaahen dash to a location and slice around himself. This spell helps him stick to targets, dodge skillshots, and reposition in the middle of a fight. Many players use E after W pulls to stay on top of the enemy and keep the trade going.
R - Grim Deliverance

Official Description: Zaahen rises then stabs downward, damaging enemies and healing for a portion of the damage dealt.
His ultimate, Grim Deliverance, lifts Zaahen into the air and then drives his glaive into the ground. The stab deals heavy damage in an area and heals Zaahen for part of the damage. You use R to finish low targets, survive clutch moments in teamfights, and combine with passive stacks to dive deep and still walk out alive.
Meet the new League of Legends champion Zaahen: Lore and background
Zaahen starts his story in Shurima, where he rises from a mortal warrior into an Ascended eagle-like god. He leads others through the rites of Ascension and fights as part of an elite host of god-warriors. When corruption spreads among the Ascended and they become the Darkin, Zaahen refuses to join their cruelty and turns against his own kind.
During the Great Darkin War, Zaahen fights alongside mortals and the Kinkou of Ionia to contain the Darkin threat. He hunts other Darkin such as Rhaast and Xolaani and sees first-hand how far they fall into bloodlust. That experience convinces him that even he might one day lose control. To prevent another catastrophe, he asks to be sealed inside his glaive and locked away in the Temple of Twilight, with Yunara watching over his prison in the Spirit Realm.
Centuries later, LeBlanc seeks Zaahen’s power and manipulates Atakhan to track his weapon. Xin Zhao and Yunara enter the temple and face the Trials of Twilight, but LeBlanc reaches Zaahen’s glaive first. In the chaos, Xin Zhao calls out to the Darkin he once knew from legend and urges him to protect the world again. Zaahen answers, shatters Atakhan in a single strike, and returns to Runeterra in a new form, with Xin as his host and a renewed mission to hunt the Fallen.
Best build for Zaahen
Zaahen wants a standard fighter setup that gives Attack Damage, health, and ability to stick to targets. You take runes and items that support long trades and let you use your passive and Q healing to the limit. Most top lane builds follow the same pattern with small item swaps based on matchup. According to Mobalytics, here is the best build for Zaahen:
Core Zaahen top lane setup (Emerald+ trends):
- Summoner Spells:
- Flash + Teleport in almost every game.
- Primary Runes (Precision):
- Conqueror as keystone.
- Triumph for sustain after kills.
- Legend: Haste for extra Ability Haste.
- Coup de Grace for better executes.
- Secondary Runes (Resolve):
- Bone Plating to survive burst in trades.
- Revitalize to boost your Q and R healing.
- Rune Shards:
- Attack Speed in offense.
- Adaptive Force in flex.
- Health in defense, or Armor / Magic Resist if the lane demands it.
- Standard core items (most popular path):
- Trinity Force as first major item for damage, health, and Spellblade procs.
- Plated Steelcaps for armor and basic attack reduction in most melee lanes.
- Sundered Sky as a second or third heavy-damage item that also heals.
- Late-game items:
- Sterak’s Gage for a big shield in extended fights.
- Death’s Dance to convert burst damage into bleed and add more sustain.
- Overlord’s Bloodmail as a tanky finisher with extra health and damage.
- Viable alternatives:
- Stridebreaker instead of Trinity Force if you need a slow to stick to mobile targets.
- Black Cleaver if the enemy team stacks armor and you want more shred.
- Spear of Shojin in some builds for extra ability uptime and chase power.
- Skill order:
- Max Q first, then E, then W, and upgrade R whenever possible (Q > E > W).
This setup turns Zaahen into a durable frontliner who deals high sustained damage and dives with confidence. You can adjust defensive stats through boots, rune shards, and late items when you face heavy AP or AD threats.
LoL Zaahen release date
Zaahen arrived on live League of Legends servers on November 19, 2025, with Patch 25.23. Riot confirms his debut in the official patch notes and labels him “Zaahen, The Unsundered,” with his release tied to the end-of-season Trials of Twilight event.
He first appears on the PBE on November 10, 2025, which gives early testers time to explore his Darkin fighter kit before launch. Riot rolls him out globally according to the standard patch schedule, so most regions gain access to Zaahen on the same day, with only minor time zone differences between shards.
Zaahen League of Legends role
Zaahen fills the role of a top-lane fighter and bruiser who focuses on extended trades and front-line presence. Riot’s developers describe him as a sustained-combat champion who wants long fights, not quick bursts, and who thrives when he can keep hitting targets and stacking his passive, Cultivation of War.
He plays best in top lane, where he can leverage his strong dueling and revive mechanic to pressure melee opponents and control waves. However, kit previews and early testing also show some jungle potential, since his dash, area damage, and sustain let him clear camps reliably if balance changes support it. Overall, League of Legends Zaahen behaves like a scaling bruiser who rewards smart spacing, patient trading, and strong side-lane control.
Best Zaahen counters
Zaahen does not win every matchup. Here are three champions he might have a hard time, especially during laning:
Heimerdinger

Heimerdinger controls the lane with his turrets. He sets up a zone that punishes every attempt you make to walk up for farm or trade. When Zaahen tries to dash in with E or pull with W, Heimerdinger’s turrets and rockets hit him many times before he can finish the all-in. Heimerdinger also pushes the wave constantly, so Zaahen struggles to freeze near his tower and loses the safe lane state he prefers.
Illaoi

Illaoi shines in hard, extended trades, which cuts directly into Zaahen’s main strength. She pulls Zaahen’s spirit with her E and then spawns tentacles that slam during every fight. If Zaahen commits, Illaoi answers with her ultimate and multiple tentacle hits that out-damage his healing and revive window. He cannot kite her well and often has to choose between losing farm or taking a brutal all-in under tentacles.
Kayle

Kayle starts weak but punishes Zaahen very hard later in the game. She gains range and strong sustained damage when she scales, while Zaahen still needs to walk into her auto-attack zone to fight. If Zaahen dives Kayle, she can use her ultimate to deny his burst and buy time for her team. In late game, Kayle’s range and true damage let her hit Zaahen safely while he struggles to reach her without using every cooldown.
