Sion, known as the Undead Juggernaut in League of Legends, is a formidable champion famous for his durability and powerful crowd control. Since he appeared in the game in 2009, Sion has changed a lot. They received one of the biggest reworks in the history of League of Legends, just like the Skarner rework, and this champion has become a very different top laner.

This guide will cover everything about Sion’s abilities, best builds, and playing strategies to help both new and experienced players make the most of this champion!

Sion skills in League of Legends

Here are all the skills of Sion in League of Legends:

    PASSIVE Glory in Death

Official description: After being killed, Sion will temporarily reanimate with rapidly decaying Health. His attacks become very rapid, heal him, and deal bonus damage based on his target's maximum Health.

After Sion dies, he briefly comes back to life with full health, which then quickly decreases. During this phase, he cannot use regular abilities but has enhanced attack speed and life steal, and his basic attacks deal additional damage based on the target

    Sion Passive

    Q - Decimating Smash

Official description: Sion charges a powerful swing in an area in front of himself that will deal damage to enemies when released. If he charges for enough time, enemies hit by the swing will also be knocked up and stunned.

This ability is crucial for Sion’s crowd control. Sion charges up a strike that damages and can knock up and stun enemies in a wide area if charged long enough. It’s excellent for controlling enemy movements and disrupting their formations during team fights.

    W - Soul Furnace

Official description: Sion shields himself and can reactivate after 3 seconds to deal Magic Damage to enemies nearby. When Sion kills enemies, he passively gains maximum Health.

Sion shields himself, which can be detonated to deal area damage. Each enemy killed by Sion permanently increases his health, bolstering his tankiness as the game progresses. This ability is key for his sustainability in fights.

E - Roar of the Slayer

Official description: Sion fires a short range shockwave that damages and slows and reduces the Armor of the first enemy hit. If the shockwave hits a minion or monster, it will be knocked back, damaging, slowing, and reducing the Armor of all enemies that it passes through.

Sion releases a shockwave that damages, slows, and reduces the armor of the first enemy it hits. If this shockwave hits a minion or monster, it propels them backward, damaging and applying the same effects to all enemies in their path. This skill is useful for both engaging enemies and clearing minion waves.

    R - Unstoppable Onslaught

Official description: Sion charges in a direction, ramping up speed over time. He can steer his charge slightly with the mouse cursor location. When he collides with an enemy he deals damage and knocks them up based on the distance he has charged.

Sion charges in a specified direction, increasing his speed and becoming immune to crowd control effects. Upon colliding with an enemy or terrain, he deals damage and knocks up nearby enemies. This ultimate is powerful for initiating team fights or making strategic escapes.

Best Sion build in League of Legends

There are many other builds that you can go with but some core items always remain the same. Here is one of the best Sion build in League of Legends according to Mobalytics:

    Core Items:

    • Sunfire Aegis enhances his damage output in sustained fights.
    • Plated Steelcaps boosts his armor, crucial for reducing physical damage from attacks.
    • Heartsteel provides Sion with additional health and increased damage based on max health.

    Key Runes:

    • Grasp of the Undying for increased sustainability and trading power in lane.
    • Demolish to help in tower sieging.
    • Conditioning for enhanced mid to late-game resilience.
    • Overgrowth increases his maximum health further, synergizing well with his W ability.

    Secondary Runes:

    • Approach Velocity to improve his capability to close distances when enemies are impaired.
    • Cash Back for occasional gold refunds, aiding in item progression.

    How to play Sion top

Most of your tactics rely on the enemy matchup but you there are some things that you can do to stay in the game whatever happens. Check some of these tips and tricks for different stages of the game:

    • Early Game: Focus on last-hitting minions and staying safe. Use Sion’s E to harass opponents and weaken minions for easier last-hits. Control the wave with your Q to keep enemies at bay and prevent them from diving under your turret.
    • Mid Game: Start pushing your lane to pressure the map. This forces the enemy team to deal with you, allowing your team to secure objectives elsewhere. Use your ultimate to initiate fights or to catch out important targets.
    • Late Game: Your role shifts to protecting your team’s main damage dealers. Use your crowd control to keep enemies away from your carries. In team fights, remember that your passive lets you continue fighting after death, which can turn the tide of a battle.

Sion counters in League of Legends

Here are the counters for Sion:

    Cho’Gath

As a fellow tank, Cho’Gath can match and exceed Sion’s lane sustain thanks to his passive, which heals him every time he kills a unit. Cho'Gath's ability to scale with size and health from his ultimate makes him harder to kill as the game goes on.

    Zac

Zac’s high mobility and disruptive crowd control can make it difficult for Sion to land his skill shots. Zac’s Elastic Slingshot allows him to engage from unexpected angles, bypassing Sion’s frontline defense and disrupting his team's formation.

    Singed

Singed excels in creating pressure through non-traditional means, such as proxy farming, which can divert Sion from effective lane control. Singed’s ability to apply continuous poison damage allows him to kite Sion effectively, avoiding direct confrontations where Sion is strongest.

    Sion release date

Sion was introduced to League of Legends on February 21, 2009. However, he received one of the biggest reworks in the game.

What happened to Sion in LoL?

Sion used to be a basic champion with limited abilities and little background. Riot changed him in 2014 through a full rework. They gave him a new look, a new skill set, and a deeper story. Sion’s new version became a powerful undead warrior from Noxus. He fights like a tank, and his kit focuses on crowd control and strong engage tools. His passive now lets him come back to life after death for a short time, allowing him to keep fighting for a few seconds.

    How to use Sion’s passive

Sion’s passive is Glory in Death. It brings him back to life for a few seconds after he dies.

Here are some tips to use it better:

    • Try to reach low-health enemies right after death.
    • Auto-attack quickly. It deals a lot of damage and resets fast.
    • If you die near a turret, hit it with your passive to get value.
    • Target enemy carries or squishy champions.
    • Don’t waste it on full-health tanks.

    Is Sion a good top?

Sion fits well in the top lane. He helps in team fights and holds his lane with ease. His Q can stop enemies from engaging, and his ultimate can start fights or help him roam. Sion also becomes stronger over time with bonus health builds.

I started writing here in 2021, but my first gig was back in 2018. That was when I realized people actually get paid to write about games. I’ve written thousands of articles for different media outlets, led teams, and conducted interviews with players.

When I’m not behind the keyboard, I’m watching Galatasaray, following the NBA, or pretending I’m still good at basketball. I also work full-time at AnyDesk, writing serious things in not-so-serious ways.
